He and his running pals were roosted in their usual spot over the pond this morning with their lady friends right with them. The big bird gobbled his head off this morning on roost, but went quite after fly down when he got with the hens. About 20 min. after everything went silent...I cluked 4 times then purred once. He immediatley responded about 50 yards to our left (our being my buddy & I. He will play a part shortly).Within secons we see the flock working through the sage coming to us. We are both ready...you know 1 2 3 shoot...when this bird steps out with a better bird right behind him. We are waiting for the third gobbler (BIG DADDY) to show when this bird spins to leave. Haven't figured out yet what happened. Anyhow...so much for waiting on BD, it's now are never...1 2 3 BANG BANG, one bird flopping, one flying. You guessed it... he missed. Made the whole thing kind of bitter sweet ya know. I'm excited as can be over my bird & he has that just punched in stomach feeling. Oh well, 1 down 4 to go before tagging out & there are still 2 birds in that group to hunt; including BIG DADDY. Good luck to all of you & please be safe. Stats : 9 1/2" , 3/4" , 17-18 lbs.
