How much Practice?

Re: How much Practice?

On a good week, I practice 5 days a week for at least an hour. Lately, its more like 3 days a week, though.

And that's not just shooting. That's yardage practice also. You could be the best shooter in the world and still if you can't estimate yardage well, you'll never get in the trophies.

Re: How much Practice?

Like hutchies said make it fun... Start by practicing at known yardages, then once you no you can hit there, start moving the target around and trying to shoot at different angles. If you are worried about losing arrows, guess what the yardage might be then range it. You will still get the practice at judging yardage without that pressure on you when you shoot. But remember you cant use a rangefinder in a competition. If you shoot enough it will all come together. And remember if your having a bad day dont change anything, just take the day off...

Practice makes perfect,

Re: How much Practice?

I use to think if I practiced all the time, I'd get better. I didn't. I had a 1.5 year lay off on 3D's and on the 2nd shoot this year won my class at a local 3D with a 326 on 30 targets. To prep, I shot maybe twice a week. So my point is, don't continually beat yourself. What do you do when you practice little? What comes natural..................Don't worry about the arrow's result, and you'll do fine. That's what I did. But then I'm no Jeff Hopkins. THAT boy can shoot a bow beyond anyones dream on this sight.

Re: How much Practice?

i find if i shoot arrows every other day i stay really sharp form wise. but i mix in some range estimation practice on the off days and on practice days. you can never have enoughof range estimation. wink.gif

im pretty lucky , i have 2 3d courses that are only 30 miles away and they are open 7 days a week. since i get off of work at 1:30pm so i have all afternoon to go shoot one of them if i want.

plus the one course has 3 - 28 target courses. so i can keep varying the courses so i dont see the same targets everytime.

just remember that when you practice, use good form on each shot. its better to shoot 25 arrows with good form and good aiming , than to shoot 75 arrows kind of willy nilly and not pay attention to what your doing.

i cant say enough about doing range estimation practice . get a laser range finder and hit your local parks, trails and woods. keep a log book of your estimates and then the actuall distance. this will pay big dividends in the long run..

it will allow you to see your progress your making and where you might have problems. good luck..

Shoot Strong

Re: How much Practice?

i say I average 4 days practicing a week and 1 3d. However, some practice sessions might only be 15 arrows. I also try to work in one long range practice (50-60 yards)so that closer shots feel that much easier. Also, on my way to class I guess yardage and see how close I am...makes me late sometimes, but helps in tournies
