Found Another Dumb One!

Saturday morning I scouted an area of our property that I hadn’t hunted in 2 years but carried my video camera along for fun. Got some close up footage of some hens inside the 10 yard line that were moving toward a drumming gobbler that was strutting his stuff just across our property line. After slipping out of there I spent a few hours mainly checking the area for turkey sign. That evening one of my hunting buddies started ragging me about fooling around with the birds instead of hunting them. Another friend of mine chimed in too so I decided to break out my shotgun and start turkey hunting again this morning.

As the first light of dawn began to break, I sat down near a small food plot to hopefully hear some birds wake up on the roost. A few minutes later a bird started gobbling south of me over a creek between the ridge I was on and another ridge about 150 yards away. cool.gif Pure luck I was that close to this bird. Shortly after that his sweetheart hens cranked up on the other side of him. One of the hens broke into a long soft yelping series like I’ve never heard from a roosted hen. She just wouldn’t quit! 2 more birds gobbled to the west off in the distance, one a little further than the other. With the hens attracting the gobbler’s attention, that sucker flew right down toward them. smirk.gif I figured with that many hens I might as well try to get on one of the other 2 birds.

Without ever touching a call to greet that gobbler, I moved away from the henned up bird to try to move in and set up on one of the other birds. By the time I moved in close to where I’d heard them they had shut up. I figured one of them was the bird I heard on the neighbor’s property yesterday so I tried to call to entice him to our side of the line where I’d heard him yesterday. He finally gobbled in the distance a lot further away but the other bird gobbled right after him on the ridge east of me well inside our property line. I eased around to get on the same ridge and as I moved in a hidden hen busted me and took flight along with what I’m pretty sure was the gobbler. crazy.gif They had moved about 300 yards in the time it took me to loop around and switch ridges. Just in case, I set up anyway to call and pondered by bonehead move. smirk.gif

After about 30 minutes I heard the faint gobble of a distant bird. Off I went to try to set up on what I hoped was a lonesome gobbling turkey. This time I cautiously approached this area. After a few anxious minutes waiting for him to give away his exact location he accommodated me with a gobble. smile.gif I moved on to close the distance as he accommodated me with a couple more gobbles. When I got to where this particular logging road I was slipping in on turned to go straight into a small food plot I glassed through the cover of brush and saw the gobbler in the food plot about 200 yards away. I watched him in half strut gobble a few times and decided to back off around 30 yards to set up and call. Another one of those I can’t see him but he can’t see me either until he’s in range situation set ups. He gobbled quite a few times at me and on his own but just wouldn’t budge from that spot. With him not moving toward me at all I decided it was time to give him the silent treatment so I quit calling and waited to see what he’d do. He gobbled a few times on his own and then went silent for about 20 minutes. Then he suddenly blasted me with a loud gobble at a crow flying overhead but now he had cut the distance in half. smile.gif Looking good now! I responded with some clucking and purring as softly as I possibly could, put the call down, readied my shotgun and that quick he appeared in the bend of the road about 40 yards away, bright red headed with a long paint brush beard swinging as he walked. cool.gif He continued to slowly walk toward me in the logging road without a clue he was in serious danger. Didn’t even give me the eye. When he hit the 30 yard mark I delivered a load of #6 hevishot that left him flopping around in the dirt. This ol long beard carries an 11 1/4” beard, a 1 1/4” spur and the other spur is a weird deformed spur that’s only 3/8” long. Great ending to my Mississippi spring turkey season. At least for me carrying a weapon anyway until I head on to Texas and Missouri.

Thought I’d share some Mississippi spring color in the pic with you from our camp.

Re: Found Another Dumb One!

Congrats on another bird smile.gif

They were henned up big time on the place I hunted over the weekend. I did see a group of 3 jakes that had some hens with them, 2 nice toms that had hens with them and then when they were going across a plowed field to the roost I counted at least 4 more toms.

Nice job!

I take it that you have killed a few this year?

Thanks for helping to pump me up for the season.

I'll be hunting in Mass as well as Vt this year and have not had time to get out yet. I need to get time off!!

Re: Found Another Dumb One!

Thanks everybody. Don't know why but for whatever reason this year the old birds sure seem to like what they're hearing from me. For whatever reason I'm sure choosing the right set up spots to talk turkey too. I've never had that many mature birds fall in such a short period of time before.

Hope everyone gets to experience a season like the one I've had so far. Ain't over yet either. wink.gif
