need2hunt
I would like to put a food plot on my dad's property. The purpose is to be beneficial to all the local wildlife but also I want to be able to attract deer to it for the second deer shotgun season (beginning of december). Last year the entire form was surounded by corn and I'm pretty sure it will be again this year. There are also crops planted on my dad's, I think you can pick out the three fields pretty easy in the pic, the fourth field in the middle (smaller and darker) is all switchgrass. Also to the south east is a large woods that the deer filter out, they basically just pass through my dads. the areas I marked in green is where I'ld like to put in the plots. It would be on a hill in a clearing in front of a small hickory tree grove and is at a good intersection of deer paths. My question is what would be a good thing to plant considering what i want it to do and the time of year I'll be hunting it? I've never messed with this stuff before so any advice is helpful, thanks. LETMGROW
Re: Food Plot Help Without a doubt brassicas would be a good choice. They should be mature in your climate and attracting deer from the other fields.
need2hunt
Re: Food Plot Help oops, I should mention that by december all the other crops will be gone from all the neighboring farms as well as my dad's - they usually get pulled out early-mid november. So this food plot will be the only standing food source.
Tominator
Re: Food Plot Help Hmmmmm, beneficial to all wildlife? I'd go with one of the big plots in corn, the other in beans, then rotate every year. In the smaller green dot, I'd go with a fall perennial blend of some sort that does not include brassicas. Deer around here tend to ignore the brassicas. I think William and Todd like Martin's fall blends. I've got crap loads of turnip seed if you want me to send that out with your popcorn, let me know soon. It's going in the mail tomorrow. How big is that little green dot? need2hunt
Re: Food Plot Help [ QUOTE ] How big is that little green dot? [/ QUOTE ] Well I'm guessing that all of the green is about 1.5 - 2 acres total.
wtnhunt
Re: Food Plot Help If I were planting an annual, I would probably go with Martins fall blend or shot plot. If you are wanting a commercial mixed perenial to plant in the fall, I would strongly suggest penningtons clover and rye supreme. The rye gives an almost immediate draw and will last all winter while the clovers are establishing.
