[/ QUOTE ] Don't agree with that at all. Seems to me that some middle class people want to live a high class life, and that's what puts them in the poor house. I by no means make "big $$$" but my wife stay's home with our daughter, we've slowly paid off all debt except our mortgage, and I'm putting a little money in savings every month. Granted, I don't live in a big new house, and drive a brand new car, but we do live in a house that keeps us warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and we are darn proud of it. Maybe too many people have lost sight of the fact that it's not where you live, but how you live that really matters in the long run. My $.02. Prices on everything goes up but pay doesn't. So you are telling me that by the time you retire that you can live comfortably and not have to worry money without social security. [/ QUOTE ] I don't know whether I will or not, I hope that's not how I came across. My point was that most people live and spend their money for right now. There's a lot of people that won't save any money for retirement and expect social security to heat their 3000 sf house and put gas in the tank of their Lincoln Navigator when they retire. I tend towards the other school of thought. I'm living below our mean's now, and putting as much money as we can afford into retirement accounts. That will hopefully pay off in the long run and make social security the icing on the cake for my retirement income, not the bread and water. I'm only 29 years old, so maybe I'm idealizing everthing too much, but it worked for my parents and grandparents, and they never brought home a six-figure income. [/ QUOTE ] Things are changing fast, and what was possible when your grandparents/parents were working may never be seen again.Heres a little example.Up untill maybe 8 to 10 years ago it was possible to buy a house in my little town here in rural Iowa for under 5000$.Not great houses mind you, they took a lotta work and needed many improvements but they werent shacks either.You could pay em off in 2 years and spend the rest of your life putting the money into the house instead of paying the house off.The same houses now are going for 40,000$ and up, and 30 year old homews that used to be in the 40 grand rage are now selling for over 100,000$.I dont know about anyone else but my pay range hasnt increased that much.But the taxes on the houses in town have also more then doubled since I bought mine 6 yrs ago.im paying close to 1000$ a year and when I bought it I was only paying 430$ a year.Now thier talking gas being 3.00$ a gallon, which is gonna drive everything else up but your and mine paychecks which will stay the same or maybe increase a tiny bit.Im glad your able to put something away and some day i really hope I can say the same, but dont think everyone else is just living above their means, most of our paychecks havent caught up to what everything else has risen to yet and its getting worse. That doesn't mean that a person has to be paying for a house when they retire. Don't take out more than a 15 year mortgage. When I crunched the numbers on the house we just sold, the 15 year mortgage I was paying on would save me around $85,000 versus a 30 year mortgage on the same house. That $85K would turn into $250K if invested over the second 15 years. Like it's been said in the Saving Money post in here, pay yourself first. Our economy has steadily grown between 8-10%, and sometimes 12%, every year historically, and that includes the depression years and the big crash of 2000. That's how I plan on being able to retire comfortably and let my Social Security, if it's even around at that time, be the icing on my retirement cake.
