Nuther'en in Georgia

I was the man behind the diaphram again this weekend. It all began to come together Saturday afternoon when my buddy and i watched 2 good longbeards flyup in the back of a big plowed field. The next morning found my buddy and my dad (who we recruited that night b/c he hasnt connected yet this year) in the doghouse blind and me sitting just behind. With the blind tucked away in the thick field edge 80 yards from the birds, i placed 3 hen decoys and cocky jake decoy out front about 15 yards. As the sky began to lighten ever so smoothly the showoff announced that he'd had a good nights rest and was ready for some lovin'. He gobbled on cue every couple minutes with his compadre chiming in several times as well. At 6:40 i whispered into the blind, yall ready . . . both nodded in assurance. I floated some sleepy tree yelps directly into the ole boys' ears. They returned the favor by attempting to deafen ours. A few more minutes and i beat the surrounding vegitation with a wing to simulate several birds headed for the field. The gentlemen followed right along in the "How its suppost to Happen" textbook, sailing out over the decoys to land 80 yards out minutes later. Then they proceeded to be a little stubborn. I was keeping the calling to the bare minimum thats all that seemed necessary. Both birds gobbled heartily at everything but were making their way toward the other end of the field, and this is a BIG field. After giving them time, i stepped up on the calling. Both birds got really cranked up, putting on a show that was incredible to witness, strutting and triple gobbling at will. Having enough of the 4 "turkeys" and the sexy talking tree stump that wouldnt join them on their route they closed the distance. Things got hairy b/c the birds came to the left side of the blind although they had started on the right side so the window on the left wasnt completely down. At 30 yards i could tell my dad was dead on the bird to the right but my buddy was trying every so carefully to get his gun out the window on the left. I hear my dad say, i'm gonna have to shoot he's getting out of the window, " One Second" my buddy replies. Just as i see my buddy finally get his barrel out the narrow window opening i hear, "Okay, 1, 2, and i see my dad's bird start walking right to left (behind the window) and can see him leaning up putting the folding chair up on 2 legs. . . 3 . . . BOOM BOOM. Left bird collapses, Right bird flips and hits the ground running, unharmed. The show was over but what a show it was, bitter sweet b/c i really wanted my dad to get a bird b/c our season's running thin. We all admited that'll be a morning we'll never forget. The unlucky bird weighed 17lbs, had a 10 3/4 inch beard, and 1" and 1 1/16" razor sharp spurs.

Re: Nuther\'en in Georgia

Congrats to all of your group Cove. Great story! Sounds like the boys put on a heck of a show for y'all to see. Sorry your dad didn't get the other bird. Like Tracy said, getting a double isn't all that easy, especially when you're trying to shoot out of the windows of a blind.
