hoytguy08 Posted April 25, 2006 Report Share Posted April 25, 2006 i am thinking of putting a treestand up on the edge of a food plot, but the only tree suitable is a big cherry tree with very little cover. there is a fork about thirty feet up that would provide good cover but thats pretty high, also i heard that cherry trees are more likely to snap than other trees. is this true or should i just put the stand there? Your Bowhunting and the higher you get the worse the angle is to the Vitals. Use the "Big" tree trunk for cover Hide behind it when deer enter the field A Better choice IMO is to scout the field edge and find the trails they are entering from...back track and find the staging area and hopefully a better tree! Cherry is a pretty brittle wood, and they do snap quite a bit, but if the tree is alive, I don't think you should worry about that. If you put your stand about 4 or 5' below that Y, the branches should break up your pattern just fine. If you want to hunt the food plot and you're concerned about your choice (or lack of choice) of trees, why not consider hunting from a ground blind. Whenever I'm in a situation where I can't get where I believe I need to be to hunt a set up like that, I won't hesitate to prepare a natural ground blind spot to hunt from. If you do choose to hunt at ground level, just make sure you're set up to hunt it so at least most of the deer aren't downwind of you before they ever reach the food plot or while they are there.
