Newarcher Posted May 16, 2006 Report Share Posted May 16, 2006 I went up to fish in NC on the Nantahala river on Saturday....the weather was perfect. My buddy and I were fishing about 40 yards apart when some guy came down the mountain from a camp site and started fishing between us and he had his dog with him. It really peeved me off because of two reasons...1) You don't fish down on someone and 2) you don't let your stupid dog splash around chasing someone else's fish they are playing. I didn't change one thing about where I was fishing there and even landed a cast right between his toes with my fly rod. He realized I wasn't going to be pushed out and he left. Jerk. I moved on down a few minutes later and was fishing when all of a sudden I caught movement out of my side vision about 15-20 yards away from me. This dog (I thought it was the jerk's dog) came out of nowhere and it was chasing a bright yellow butterfly. It chased the butterfly off the bank while running on its back legs and swatting at the butterfly with its front legs.....all while navigating the terrain and the drop off to the river and the river itself. I was amazed at its agility and speed. I turned around with fire in my eyes looking for the owner (I had enough of this guy already) to bless him out for being so careless to let their dog ruin my fishing. Only there was no owner there. Then I started looking closer at the 'dog' and realized that it wasn't the German sheppard pup I thought it was....it was a Coyote. After I looked back at it, it was obvious that it was a yote. I whistled at the yote and it flinched like it had been shot at because it had no idea I was there due to the river noise. It looked upstream at me for a few seconds (I didn't move) and then scampered straight up a mountainside that I would need ropes to climb. It was a really cool experience to have such a beautiful beast so close to me and to see it more or less playing and having a good time. I watched a male yote scent mark almost every round bale in a 50 acre field one day. He had a female with him and she would ambush him behind every other bale. One of the highlights of my hunting spot (lost it this year to development) was that the animal farm next door had a resident Red fox. The biggest red I have ever seen....it was almost as big as this yote. He would meander out into the field and just sit down and watch the field as if he owned it. When I was pretty young, probably about 17, my brother and I were cutting across an open field to a set of ponds we call "The Double Ponds." We got within sight of the ponds when we saw two large birds flying overhead. They turned out to be bald eagles. It was literally the first time I had ever seen one and had definately never seen one there. We watched as they scooped down time and time again in attempt to grab a mallard off of the ponds! The ducks went under every time but the eagles tried over and over! Eventually the eagles made a big circle and the ducks took off. They outflew the eagles. Literally, the eagles couldnt keep up. Jeramie, we're starting to get a lot of bald eagles in my area...they showed up about 7 or 8 years ago and their numbers keep increasing. With Lake Erie and all of its tribs I guess its really an ideal habitat for them. I spend a lot of time around the water, so I've seen quite a few over the past few years. anyway, this past April, I was walking a stream looking for spawning steelhead, when a bald eagle came flying down and drilled about a fish about 60 yards up stream from me. My parents moved to Locust Grove twenty some odd years ago and ive been there every since. I still have a lot of family in Bartlesville. Btw, We have eagles in different parts of Okieland They are just now getting thick enough to move around in our neck of the woods. Around Tulsa they have Eagle "Watch" parties. In the last few years ive started to see them (during certain times of the year) all over. I use to see several on my 15-minute commute to Pryor, Ok. [/ QUOTE ] Like Ive said in my above post, there are several nesting sights around Oklahoma I dont know if they are starting to populate or what but its not nearly the big deal it was a few years ago to see one around. I had only seen those two (chasing ducks) roughly 13-years ago and now I see them pretty regularly. I took some good sillouette (sp?) pics a few years back. Ill try to dig them up. We have an abundance of hawks. I assume because Oklahoma does have a lot of prarie and mice and such are very common. Ive counted several times, on my way to Tulsa, and its nothing to see 13+ in roughly 15-miles (between Chouteau and Inola Oklahoma). I love seeing all the hawks....
