sureshot Posted November 24, 2004 Report Share Posted November 24, 2004 Today we were out deer huntign,there was 3 of us and I dropped my brother nad a friend down on the edge of a lake, I drove up 2 miles and pulled within 500 yards of the lake in a low spot, grabbed my howler and distress call wand walked to the lake edge!I got on a hill I could see most directions, i gave out a few greetign howls and barks and then started on the disress call, before I was doen my first suquence about 1 minute I spotted 3 coming across the ice form the opposite shore,[1/2 mile away/ I gave a few barks and they were coming on full run,[remember I am deer huntign, in white coveralls and orance full touque, and hardly anuy snow here] as I am watching them I see ears and another coyote pops over the hill at 15 yards watching me,I see him and right behind him in the same view is the 3 coming,I decide to let the one be as long as possable to see what happens with the 3 but he decides to get a smell of me so he starts down the bottom of the draw 30 yards away, I bark he stops and I decided to take him couse a few more steps he would wind me,Bang#1 is down, I grabbed the howler and let otu a coyote distress call right away and looked to see the 3 still coming at 300 yards out,they dissapear into a hticket and next thing I see one standign below me at 60 yards or so, bang#2 down, I pull on another one sittign at 200 yards and bang, I missed in all the exitement and the pair left are runnign up the hill I let out a few more distress calls and they stop and bang#3 is down!I decided I have a long walk so I would leave the gun to drag them all up and as I picked the farthest away is ee another one coming from the other way but spotted me,I drug them back to the truck and picked up my buddies and they said did yous ee the last one, I guess another one crossed the lake and entered the draw I was calling from when I was heading back to the truck! That si all the coyotes I got today, managed to call in a fox at another "pick up spot lol' I got him in the head at 75 yards! Not a bad day for deer huntign and not coyote lol!! My buddy laughs couse I would rather grab my coyote call and call coyotes than deer hunt, and to tell the truth I would!!I ahve shot alot of deer and soem big ones but never had the exitement I did today whan I was right in the center of all the action! If I would not of missed and stayed sittign for a extra 15 minutes I could of had 6 from one stand,not like I am complaining abotu 3 though! Awsoem day can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!! I usually try to take them when I'm archery hunting for deer. Theres a pile of them, and when sunset comes you get to hear just how many bushy tails there are in the neighborhood.
