Doc Posted November 26, 2004 Report Share Posted November 26, 2004 The following article appeared in our local paper Wednesday: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A 33 year old Naples man was charged with second-degree menacing Tuesday after he threatened another man with a shotgun during a dispute over a dead deer, Yates County sheriff's deputies said. Joseph L. Goodwin of 4749 Route 245 was charged by deputies after they received a complaint that he discharged a firearm during an argument with a Naples man. Deputies said the two men were arguing over a deer shot on property behind Goodwin's residence when Goodwin fired one round into the ground. Goodwin was released with an appearance ticket for Italy Town Court on Dec. 15 at 7 pm. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- While it is not clear from the article, the deer was on the property of the man that was shot at not this Goodwin guy. Now, my question is: "Has the hunting world gone nuts????" What in the devil is going on these days anyway? We got a guy shooting a bunch of people out in Wisconsin over a tree stand and now this kind of confrontation here in NY. I'm hoping this kind of wacko behavior is not becoming a trend. It really starts me wondering how many annual hunting fatalities are really accidents and how many are the result of purposeful demented wackos. I understand people getting upset when they find trespassers on their land, but if they could calmly tell the person they are on posted land and need to leave now, I think there would be less violent confrontations. I know I would be very upset if someone was trying to claim a deer I shot, but I think walking away and getting a game warden is much more effective and safer than trying to deal with an ticked off and armed hunter yourself. I don't see this as a hunter's only problem and more of a lifestyle problem! Just look at road rage and other situations where people are totally losing it over small things (professional sporting games also come to mind). Everyone needs to calm down and get a grip! Like I posted in another thread I started (Slobs - in the deer hunting room), we need to remember this is a recreational sport, not a life or death situation. It may be frustrating...but how much harm is really done finding someone walking across your property or sitting in a stand as long as its not happening frequently. I do understand that some people in here are having serious problems with it happening everyday though and they need to take it to the next level by notifying the law... Doc, I read a lotta posts in here and was actually thinking about this yesterday.First your post in the other room concerning public land deer numbers vs the number of hunters on them.Then theres a whole list of posts about tresspassersThen theres a post about the changing attitude of landowners concerning posting thier property as opposed to not posting it. First Im not condoning tresspassing, just making an observation.You have more and more hunters being forced on to public lands.You have fewer and fewer deer on these same lands.You have more and more people losing hunting grounds for one reason or another.The states have fewer and fewer funds available to purchase new public ground.I think these things are all contributing to the tresspassing, and the craziness you see over a deer. You got more hunters, on the same amount of ground, with less deer, it makes it pretty competetive.People try to take each others deer, use each others stands, cramming in the same area someones already hunting, and your gonna get confrontations like this. On the other hand you got people who dont want to deal with the mess of hunting on public land and it leads to tresspassing, which leads to more confrontations. A lot of guys were used to hunting, like I was when I first started, you could go from property to property hunting without anyone getting mad, pressing charges, or posting thier land.When I was a kid the farmers would just wave and ask if you were having any luck if they seen you come outta thier fields.Thats changing but some cant adjust to losing access to places theyve always hunted in th past.Which again is gona lead to confrontations. A deer is not worth a fight that could lead to the loss of a human life. Really makes me glad I am able to hunt on my own land behind the house. I think antlers have a huge influence on hunters, everybody has to get their buck to impress their buddies. Guest huntinsanobsession Posted November 26, 2004 Report Share Posted November 26, 2004 Re: Are People Going Nuts??? this is my first year hunting and i joied this forum to hear from people that hunt alot and even though this is my first year it just sickens me how unethical some people who call them selves huters can be like the other day i was wlking down the road and there were like 15 cars and trucks parked on the side of the road and this area was posted bow hunting prefured casue it was inbetween two roads and all of a sudden i hear like 30 shots from the same area and i can't jump to conclusions but i will almost garentee anything but i will bet that all those guys were pushing deer. and it just upsets me cause it gives more back up to the anti hunters to try to stop hunting Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

whitetailkiller Posted November 27, 2004 Report Share Posted November 27, 2004 Re: Are People Going Nuts??? i personaly think all these accidents or issues were happening in previous years ....but now that the clinton gun ban expired the anti's are making sure all hunting and shooting accidents or issues are made public.......... hunting is still safer than driving a car( more automotive deaths per year than hunting) the hole world is falling pray to the influences of evil ,,,, i think jesus is coming sooner than we all think!!!!!!!!! i hope you all are ready!!!!!!! i know i am!! [/ QUOTE ] As I understand it, it was a very nice buck. Also, the buck came through, not showing a lot of signs that it was even hit. However, I never did hear how good a hit, or even IF there was a wound on the deer when the second guy shot it. Last year my brother-in-law from Canada gut shot a deer after the slug hit a sapling and ricocheted. Another guy shot the deer after we jumped it up again. He finished it off. This is something that could have erupted into something nasty, but we heard the guy shoot. His shot was obviously the one that put the deer on the ground. Even though the wound was eventually going to kill the buck, there was some real question as to whether we actually would have gotten the deer anyway because he was still moving along just fine. And, frankly, we were just glad that someone finally got it so it would not go to waste. There never was any question about that situation. As far as we were concerned, it was the other guy's deer. Our incident happened on state lands, so there was no real property ownership issues. It was a nice buck and we could have turned the whole affair into something ugly, but what's the point?
