Guest SpringCreek Posted June 26, 2006 Report Share Posted June 26, 2006 I am heading down to my ranch tomorrow to do some trimming and set up some blinds and put out protein and feeders and I am going to be setting up some new tree stands.. My question is how high is high enough when bow hunting. In all of these movies I see they are pretty far up.. At my ranch in Texas we have trees but a straight and tall one is pretty hard to come by.. Anyone have any suggestions?? maddhunter Posted June 26, 2006 Report Share Posted June 26, 2006 Re: How High??? First off WELCOME to the RT forums!!!!! I like to have mine no less than 15 feet if I have enough cover behind me. I think 20' is ideal in moderate timber. Just remember the closer to the ground you are the less movement you will be able to get away with, and the less distance your scent will travlel before it hits the ground. And don't rule out ground blinds, especially if you have some thick cover they like to travel in and out of. And also I have learned not to set up stands right over feeders, set them about 200-400yrds away on a trail leading to or from them. I aslo agree with maddhunter,, 20ft, is optimal in most applications.. Any higher than that, you really have to take account of the angle of your shots... Dont let these cameras fool you...to me sometimes it looks like their 40 yards off the ground, let alone from any deer that walks by, in most of the videos!!! Tripod Stand sounds like it would be the best for your situation. Possibly ladderstand that you could ratchet tightly into a tree also may work. I grew up hunting in East Texas pinywoods and that's where I started bow hunting. In East Tx you should be no less than 20 feet. E.Tx deer for some reason tend to look up, don't ask why but they do. A good friend of mine told me this and I found it to be true. Any thing less than 20 feet I got busted. I arrowed my first buck and a Pope and Young at 25 feet. The Hill Country I hunted for 5 years and 15 feet was plenty. I now hunt South Texas and I arrow more deer,hogs,Javelinas from a 6 foot tri-pod than any other way. I've had success at 15' but also had lots of deer look up at me at that distance too. I normally had my stands 15 to 18 based on a stick ladder I used to help hang stands but this past fall and this upcoming season my stands are going to be well over 20. Seesm like deer have no clue your there when your around 25 to 30. I agree this can change shot angle so you need to practice from this hieght to make sure your pins are still on. Been many a times that I have had deer walk under, in some cases even between the tree and the ladder, with me in the stands. It will vary depending on the terrain & cover. A good background cover behind you makes a big difference.Whatever height, make sure you are comfortable with it. I hate to have a predetermined stand height idea before I choose a set. The stand height would depend on the setup and cover. I prefer to be in the 16' to 22' range provided I can make the best use of the available cover. That's the main reason I prefer hang on stands of other types of stands. I have sets that require hunting at ground level from natural ground blinds and treestands that range from 12' to about 32' for bowhunting. I don't like having any treestand set up where a deer is looking directly at me from the direction I expect them to approach from either. Off to the side of a trail is best even when it comes to stand locations at food sources. If there is a bend in the trail I prefer the outside of the bend since a deer is more likely to be looking at the trail past the bend more so than the other direction. Wind direction, back cover, sun direction, angle that the animals are coming from play a huge role in how I set up. I do prefer lock on tree stands, but in South Texas trees large enough are far and few between. Hunting in 6 ft tripods and pop up stands add a whole new adventure to the hunt. There is nothing like having deer at 10 yards and you only 6 ft off the ground. I have had deer as close as 3 ft in front of me in a 6 ft tripod and they never knew I was there.
