Guest silvestris Posted June 30, 2006 Report Share Posted June 30, 2006 If you often find yourself hours form your truck in the middle of some God forsaken mountain top thicket looking for a deer that would have otherwise died of old age, this gun my be for you. As soon as I saw the X7, I couldn’t get my credit card out of my pocket fast enough. I believe it has several advantages over the standard omega that still hunters will enjoy. The most obvious change from the standard Omega is the shorter 24in barrel. The whole unit checks in at just over 38in. It comes in stainless or blued with a brown laminate stock. It has also been dressed up a little via a fluted receiver and tapered barrel. My favorite change is the addition of a Williams peep sight rather than the conventional open sights. I believe this change alone speaks volumes about the purpose that T/C intended this gun to fulfill. The Williams sight allows for instant conversion to a “ghost ring” configuration for use in low light and quick target acquisition. In fact, I found that it works so well I’m not even going to bother with the low power scope that I was going to install. The places I hunt I can’t see a deer at 50 yards, much less take a shot at one, so the open sights should do the job. The trigger is the best factory muzzleloader trigger I have experienced. It breaks clean with no creep at just over 3lbs. The Simms recoil pad is nice as well, especially when I started dropping 150gr of powder down the barrel. There is not a whole lot I don’t like about the gun, but if I where king, this is what I’d change. First, the grip and trigger area feels cramped to me so maybe a little more room in there. Second, the action makes a terrible racket when it locks closed; this is a big deal if there are deer about. Third, I got the blued version but I would have liked matte black or cameo for stealth reasons. Fourth, I wish gun makers would utilize green fiber optics rather than red on the front sights of guns. I feel green is more visible in low light. I was not able to shoot the 100-yard range today and with out a scope I don’t know if I can do the gun justice at that range. At 50 yards however, the gun seemed to like everything I put down the barrel. The best group was 100gr 777 with 245gr XTP’s. I also shot 295gr hollow point powerbelts and 250gr shockwaves with very similar results, but then, it was only 50 yds. For a field test I will have to wait `till November. O’ well. Its rare in deer season, unless you happen to hunt west of Blueridge or possibly in Prince William Co. Since you are going with a short range setup, you may want to consider using a larger, full diameter bullet rather than a sabot. It will be easier to load, provide a larger hole for blood trailing in the no snow times, and can be cheaper than the high end sabots. Just a thought. I see you live in Manassas AJ. Do you ever get out to the GW forest to hunt? If you do then you understand my enthusiasm for a practical muzzle-loading carbine. The more blood the more better in those thickets. The 245XTP’s where barrowed, the Shockwaves came with the gun and the 295 Powerbelts are what I have been using. Since with the open sights I have no fear of getting clobbered by the scope, I’m considering going heavier in both powder charge and bullet weight this season.
