Another Mathematical question (Tominator approved)

I have another mathematical blush.gifgrin.gif question. My pool is now in place and I want to use this product Rubber mulch to go around the pool for proper drainage. My pool is 24' round. I need it to go about 12-18" out from the pool and maybe 6-8" high at the pool and slope away for drainage. How would I determine the square footage of coverage I would need for this? Thanks...

The perimter of your pool is 75.36 ft. Annnndddd I keep coming up with a really screwed up answer for the cubic feet.... grin.gif

Figure the big radius, square it, figure the little radius, square it, subtract those two numbers, then multiply the answer by pi.

At least that's the way the webpage reads.

Sheesh, I have to spell check AND do the math?

what tominator says is right. simple geometry stuff that i was doin all last year. If I get REALLY bored here a little bit, i'll do the math myself.lol

Heres how I got my answer.....

1. The perminter of a circle is 2XpiXr, so in the case of a 24 ft pool, 2X3.14X12 = 75.36 ft.

2. Convert 75.36 ft to inches = 904.32 inches

3. Punch the numbers in on my handy online calculator.... http://tsm-twvm.eustis.army.mil/cubicfeetininches.htm

And there you have it..... grin.gif

Tried figuring out a similar equation when putting pea gravel around the pool, between the house and the pool and around the swingset. Decided to just order a full 25 ton load. Have some leftover, I have kept on the side of the house for future usage.

Quick question, when you say 6-8" at the pool and slope away, at the bottom of the slope how thick do you plan to put the mulch? My previous answer is pretty liberal....

8" thick at the edge of the pool...2" thick 1 foot out from the pool.

I'll give it a go. Here are my assumptions:

The pool has a diameter of 24' giving it a 12' radius. The depth of the fill is 8" and will extend 18" from the edge of the pool.

The solution of that problem is to subtract the volume of an 8" thick disc with a radius of 12' from an 8" thick disc with a radius of 12.75' - simple.

The inner disc volume is 2/3 feet times PI times 12 squared (or 144 feet squared), or 301.44 cubic feet.

The outer disc volume is 2/3 feet times PI times 12.75 squared (or 162.5625 feet squared), or 340.2975 cubic feet.

The difference is about 39 cubic feet. If you slope it some, then the thickness is not uniformly 8" across the full depth, so 39 cubic feet will have a little left over, but not much. You'll probably have that much dribbled across the ground and lying in the bed of your pickup truck.

If you slope it to zero, then the volume is exactly half or around 19 cubic feet. Sounds like your answer is closer to the 19 cubic feet than the 40 or so cubic feet. I'd plan on around 25 cubic feet.
