Tennessee made use of crossbows during the archery season legal last year. Personally do not think a crossbow is as difficult to take a deer with as a bow that you have to draw, and the challenge of getting your bow drawn without being busted is to me what the biggest thrill of archery hunting is all about. I still use a compound, and will not probably ever change to a crossbow unless for some reason I become unable to draw a bow even though they are now legal here. Bowhunter61, first of all, welcome to the forums, and beware, this topic gets heated and out of hand quick, and we've debated this quite a bit in the past. My opinion--yea. They've been legal in Ohio longer than I've been bowhunting, and that goes all the way back to 1987. Ohio's deer herd continues to grow and is very healthy. You should do a search on crossbows to check out the past discussions. As for your question, I have no problem sharing the woods with crossbow hunters. There's alot less movement with a crossbow because there is no need to draw it back. All, you have to do is point and shoot. I look at crossbows as being more like a gun that shoots arrows than a bow. Here in New York they can only be used by severely disabled individuals and only then with the aide of a mouth trigger. IMHO...New York should relax that regulation to "If a person can get a disabled placard for their vehicle Crossbow use should be automatic" Disabled individuals have enough going against them in life without the state of New York standing against them and restricting Hunting! Here in PA you can only use them if you are disabled and have a permit which I think is great, but if they were to legalize them for everyone to use that would not bother me one bit either. I doubt I would use one because I am used to hunting with compounds and that's what I enjoy doing, but I couldn't care less if the guy next to me was using a compound, crossbow, or recurve. The compound bow is a weapon that requires hundreds of hours of practice time and CONSTANT tuning. I simply do not have that kind of time in my schedule. I have also heard other hunters say the same thing. I would like to try hunting with a crossbow during the archery season but certain factions here in NY are fighting them. I say Yah. In fact I plan to purchase a crossbow soon for fun shooting and on the off chance I might get to hunt in Canada with my buddy Muff some day. Many gun hunters have no respect for the land and/or the game they hunt. Especially, while hunting public land in NY. I'm not saying all gun hunters are like this. BUt you get the idea, if your a bowhunter I think you have a different outlook on hunting and have more respect for the game, and take more ethical shots. Many gun hunters don't care. They drink before they hunt and smoke cigarettes while hunting. You get the idea. The reason I don't want crossbows allowed during bowseason for everyone is because the gunhunters will go out and buy crossbows. I do not want to share my bowseason with these idiot gunhunters. Again, I'm not saying all gunhunters are like this but you get the idea. That's why I like bowhunting better because there are far less hunters in the woods and I don't have to deal with the disrespectful and loud gunhunters. Alot of hunters say they want to get as many hunters out in the woods as possible. But deep down, no one ever wants to see another hunter in the woods. Why would you, all it does is scare the der away!!!! If crossbows were legalized for everyone during bowseason then the gunhunters would go out and buy them and us bowhunters would have to deal with them all hunting season not just gun. So rossman, what you are saying is because I am a gun hunter, that I am a slob, that I smoke, and drink when at deer camp? Quite contrare my friend. I HARDLY DRINK BEER AT ALL during hunting season, and I don't smoke. I know a guy that smokes during bow season, and he hunts with a bow........I know people taht don't pull their bow out till a week or so before season starts, so it ain't just gun hunters that are unethical in that aspect. I am sure your more "serious" hunters practice with all weapons they hunt with, I know I do. But to generalize gun hunters as slobs, and think bow hunters are not, couldn't be further from the truth IMO. BTW, I hunt with all three weapons, ML, gun, and Bow, and I take all 3 VERY seriuosly. I may practice more with my bow that the other 2, BUT I do know my ability with a rifle, and have shot one for ALOT more years than a bow..... I only hunted ONE year with a bow and the other 30 years I have been an idiot gun hunter!!! Now I will have to sell all my guns! Just because you want to keep the bowhunting season all to your self! Yes, there are some slob rifle hunters! There are also some slob bow hunters! There are just people who are slobs and don't do or live the way you do! That is not the bases for casting such a blanket statement as you did! The reason I posted that both bows and crossbows should be outlawed is just as ridiculous as your saying that "rifle hunters are nothing but slobs"! That my friend, is pure rubbish! I think a thread like this is not very important and all it does is to tear the hunting community apart and open the door for the activists! Let's not do anything like that! In Missouri you have to have a special permit to hunt with a crossbow during the archery season. Me I wouldn't use a crossbow unless I was unable to use a bow.
