rifleman25
Re: nephews first time [ QUOTE ] we have a youth season in iowa that starts the earliest of all seasons and it can be gun or muzzle, any thoughts on what to get his teeth cut on? if so what caliber, gauge, load, any advice would be great [/ QUOTE ] I'd say since Iowa is not a rifle state any 20 ga slug should work fine, or about any muzzleloader round. Get him out to a bench rest and start with the lightest recoil possible and get him used to the gun. Remember to make it fun.

archerjg
Re: nephews first time Try both and see which he likes the best. The 20 gauge would would fine and the muzzleloader would work fine and it might have a little less kick to it. Archerjg
mike
Re: nephews first time how many grains do you start with if you use ml. i would imagine there is a safe min. load as there is a max
wtnhunt
Re: nephews first time My oldest daughter started out with a ml, using my black diamond I reduced my loads for her to 85 grains shooting a 240 grain xtp mag. She was shooting this gun with these loads at age 7 or 8, and she is pretty small. She killed her first deer last season during the youth hunt with a rifle though at 9 years of age. She shot her deer with a savage model 10 in .243. If I were you and you are allowed to use rifles, would go with a .243 or a 25 06.

wtnhunt
Re: nephews first time The youth hunt here used to only be age 10-16, last year TN changed that to 6-16. There is no minimum age limit here to be able to deer hunt though.
