My husband and I went out Saturday to set up one of my bow stands and the loggers had already been busy. They are making a HUGE mess and the woods is definitely taking on a whole new appearance. Its a hard cut this time but was necessary in order to keep the woods in the family verses being sold to outsiders. Alot of large seed trees (alot of white oak included) are being left to ensure future harvests, which is good. And tops are being left which the deer will love. Another good thing is they will likely be done before opening day of bow season. My stand is set up and ready to go! All that remains is to place the cam to get some pics of what is prowling around. The deer really like running skidder trails. dragging logs works up the ground and the deer can easily get to the minerals. I love hunting fresh logged woods. Good luck. Hope it works out well for you. Logging in December cost me 2 late seasons of not seeing many bucks, but I can't say much when my Dad is a logger and I hunt on some of his land. The property I have hunted was partially logged 2 1/2 years ago. I was not happy, the loggers made a mess and the deer patterns I had gotten used to were different. But over the last two years I have seen more bucks. Not neccesarily more deer because of the thick, nasty growth as a result of the logging, but definitely more bucks are utilizing the cover. We have high hunting pressure and don't see top caliber bucks hardly, but last year I shot this deer. Its like 10th in the county overall for gun and the taxidermist scored him at 2 1/2 years old which means he was born when the logging was done. We have never seen deer like this EVER. All the hunters around our land were amazed. Now for wisconsin I'm sure this is not big. For us this is huge. Anyway, what I'm saying is your deer should get bigger on the new browse and more bucks should move into into the wonderfully impassible, briar-infested cutovers. I wish you best of hunting with your new cutovers and keep me informed if you have any success! I'm planning to head out to the woods this weekend to see how the loggers are doing. The last time the woods was logged, my group still abided by one of the elders rules...NO TREE STANDS! So it was awful hunting on the ground with all the tops laying around! This elder believed treestands were unethical. Well...he passed away and my other uncle and my father (the 3 shared land ownership) had no problem with treestands (so long as no nails are used in the trees) so at least we will be ABOVE the mess this time.
