joebobhunter4 Posted August 23, 2006 Report Share Posted August 23, 2006 i seen a nice buck that id like to get with my bow the other morning along a thick tree row that kinda made and L and then had a thick tree row in the middle of the bean field. id like to ground hunt the area for him when the season opens. i was wondering if that deer will still stay in those trees if nobody kicks him out? or do they like to roam around? thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Well from what ive learned over the past years and notcied most of the time they will travel around the same area just because they have their food source, water, and beds. BUT deer have two different patterns, a summer and a winter pattern. Right now you still might be able to get him when bow season comes in because its like the end of summer to them. Try not to disturb the area but make sure you have good shooting lanes. That deer shouldn't change his natural patterns until closer to the rut. The one thing that will change it is Hunting pressure or other outside influence. I personally would try to stay out of the area for at least a week before you hunt it. Don't forget about scent. Try not to take to much scent in with you when you hang that stand. Approach it like you would on opening day. And make sure you have an easy in and out. I think he'll be in the area, like within a square mile, but if he's like the deer around me, they shift their range based on crop rotation and the rut. Heck, you can always try and get him. Use precautions with your scent and be as quiet as possible. He'll probably still be in the area in 9 days. Besides your lucky to be able to hunt in 9 days, I got over a month still. From what I have seen they kinda stay around the same area until the rut then they travel outside there home range "bucks" He the buck you saw is most patternable right now in his summer time pattern just my thoughts on it. I would hang that stand now maybe in the middle of the day and back out of there dont return till hunting season, remeber to spary down the tree with sent killer when your done you dont want him to know is the trick good luck! If you have the buck patterned, don't mess with it this close to the season. Get in at least 2 hours before sunlight on opening day and set the stand. Try to get out there when you know he isn't around. Deer hit beans early season and I know he will be still be in there, if nothing bumps him out. He is using that area for a reason and feels safe. I would hang a stand early and yes find a trail and see......then if you see him while you are hunting, move you stand closer for another day. Be flexable and able to move your stand to other trees to hone in on him. Now that you know a mature buck is using this area, scout it out on the off season and maybe there will be future mature bucks using that area. Good luck and give'er a shot! Around here outside the rut, the deer seem to have a fairly small core area, probably under one sq mile. When the rut kicks in they might travel several miles in a single night.
