I bought mine on-line for $24 then discovered they had them at WallyWorld for $10 less. If I understand correctly, the key is to use them during the rut. Essentially the growl is an expression of sexual frustration by a buck. It signals to other bucks that he is in the presence of a doe that is ready to breed but she is not permitting him to breed her. My guess is that the call will work in areas with higher deer populations and higher buck-to-doe ratios. If you are in an area where there is very little competition for breeding rights then the bucks probably won't be as drawn to it, much like rattling.
