Guest highwayman
Hello gentlemen, i am new here and to muzzleloading (well inlines atleast) and was just reading around and have found some answers to much of the questions that i have. thanks for the info it will go a long way to saving me some hard lessons. i just bought a new CVA Kodiak Pro Magnum in full camo and mounted a Team Realtree Nikon 4X scope on it and have to say that it is one sweet looking gun. does anyone have any opinions on this gun or some help with bullet load options would be greatly appreciated. i bought a box of pyrodex pellets and of course was going to start with 100 gr charges and have two bullet options to try this afternoon, i bought a pack of Powerbelt 245 gr. with the aerotip and some TC Shockwave 200 gr. (i Belive) sabots. ant thoughts here? also using to start with some winchester 209 primers that are for shotshells but also seen that winchester is making primers just for muzzleloaders too which is better or it is negligable........thanks again for the great info and am looking forward to this season using only the CVA. Dakota
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading CVAs are good quality guns. I shoot an in-line Hunterbolt in .50. Shot my first whitetail doe w/ that gun. I use Maxi-ball 370 gr. conicals w/ 100 gr. of powder. It's a great gun, but because it's an older model (no. 11 percussion cap) it doesn't work well w/ Pyrodex pellets and is now jammed from last season. I'm getting it fixed. All that needs to be done is to dislodge the conical and slide the pellets right out. Good luck and happy hunting! Dakota
AJ
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading Welcome to the forums and the world of modern muzzleloading. I'll bet you find the sabots are more accurate then the Powerbelts. The Powerbelts will load a lot easier but they not shoot as well. You will have to shoot them to find out for sure. Keep an eye on the fouling in the bore. A muzzleloader fouls the barrel extremely fast. I swab between every shot with a spit patch followed by a dry patch. As for the ignition source, I have not had much consistancy with the 209 primers. They are a bit too hot for optimum performance.
Guest highwayman
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading i have used my flintlocks alot in the last 5 years but this in line deal is quite alot easier and maybe i'm making it tougher i dont know...... AJ what exactly are yu calling a spit patch, i usually use thompson bore cleaner on a patch between every shot? that is in my flintlocks though. going here a few minutes to shoot my new Kodiak for the first time and am gonna try both the powerbelts and the tc shockwaves at 50 yards first and i'll let you all know what happens for me. thanks again and look forward to talking toyou all. livnreklis
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading I think when everyone says spit patch basicly means you just run some sort of wet patched cleaner down the barrel. Then follow up by a dry patch between shots to keep the deposits down. Rather then doing a full brass brush scrubbing between shots. When I am at the range I clean after every 2nd shot and AI do the whole shabang with cleaner and a brush, cause I figure if I am using my ML for hunting my "kill" shot will be from a clean bore, and that is the base I want to sight in with. AJ
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading By a spit patch, I mean I take a clean patch and lick it. Saliva will work just fine for cleaning this amount of fouling. It provides enough moisture to clean but not too much to saturate the breech area. I follow it up with a dry patch to keep moisture to a minimum.
Guest highwayman
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading well just got back from camp and what an umbelievable experience that was. this Kodiak is such a dream to shoot. it hits exactly and let me stress exactly what i aim at. i used two 50gr. pyrodex pellets with a 245 gr. powerbelt with aerotip and at 80 yards it was effortlessly grouping shots in the 1" range with a majority of the shots touching. as a matter of a fact the first shot was the only shot that didnt touch the bullseye which was a 2" diamond. as for the rest of the pack of 15 powerbelts they were in there and most touching each other. i would shoot two shots and then use tc bore cleaner on a patch and then two dry patches in between every two shots and accuracy was not a problem at all. i literally dont have centerfires that shoot this good. i also tryed some TC shockwaves 200 gr. but they didnt seem to hold any grouping with the best being around 4" at 80 yards. i guess i just lucked out with the right combination cause i am not exxagerating those powerbelts and pyrodex pellets were right on every single time with 90% of the shots touching each other. i chose 80 yards to sight in because i have never had to shoot at a deer past that here in NW Pa. Guest Bushpilot
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading Hey Highway man, This is almost "Twilight Zone" type stuff with a few exceptions! This is my first ML season. I bought a Kodiak Pro 209 Magnum all camo (including barrel with a Nikon 3-9X40 Realtree camo scope. I went to the range with Sabots (Barnes MZ Boattail) and PowerBelts. 777 50 grain pellets. I got on the paper and touching holes at 25 yards first. Then I moved out to 100 yards. I shot up all Powerbelts and about 5 or 6 Barnes. I couldn't get 3 shots to be consistant at 100 yards. Oh sure...I'd get close to the center a couple times...then out left...up right...level right ...maybe a second level right...ect. Very frustrating. And by the way, I am shooting with a front and rear rest...so flinching is not the case. Speaking of flinch...MY GOD the trigger pull on that Kodiak is HARD! I've never experience such a pull on a rifle before. Sure...my DA .357 snub nose has a strong pull, But that is a DA Pistol! I let my buddy shoot the Kodiak a couple times and after sitting there for a few seconds I saw him look back to see if there was a "Safety" engaged! Unbelievably hard trigger pull! (of course comparitively I mean). I could seat a second shot with a Powerbelt...smoothe and easy loading until you get to the burn ring at the base of the barrel. Then it got a little tougher. A hard push is needed for the last 3/4 inch. Third shot even tougher. Next time I go out...I might try at 50 yards first...then move out a bit...swabbing after every shot. I might also try a 30/50=80 grain pellet combo and see what happens. One other thing...getting to the hammer with gloves on (hammer under rear of mounted scope) is not going to be a piece of cake. Even an ungloved thumb touches the scope when pulling the hammer back. I'm going to look for one of those attachments that stick out from the side of the hammer. Over all...I think it is a Good Looking ML, and fine for a begginer like me but, in a few years when my wife lets me buy another one, I'm going to do a little more "Practical" research. Guest highwayman
Re: New Here and to Muzzleloading bushpilot, my new kodiak is identical to yours right down to the scope but i went with the fixed 4X power camo nikon. as for accuracy, as i said before i had absolutely no problem at all with mine. and i really find that weird what you say about the trigger because that is one of the things my buddy and i absolutely loved about mine, no play and very light pull, we both loved the trigger the best and couldnt belive a gun in this price range had that crisp of a trigger. i do agree with you about the hammer and scope thing though, definitely need a side hammer spur for when hunting with gloves on. and also yes the second shot was harder to load than the first but was to be expected, the crud ring built up quick but gonna give them new winchester 209's for muzzleloaders a try this weekend, read that they cut down on the fouling considerably. thanks for your honest info and your opinion, wish you had the same luck with yours as i do mine, i cant see myself upgrading anytime soon if it continues shooting like this........
