Terrific Opening Day!

Took Tanner (oldest son - age 12) out for a walk on opening morning of archery season for elk and had an unforgettable morning. Started out by spotting a young bull across the drainage and then another and another and eventually a 4th bull all hanging together as I'm sure they did all summer. Tried a little calling which fired up two of the bulls who began to fight - was awesome hearing the antlers clash even from clear across the drainage. Anyway, while enjoying the show, we heard branches cracking behind us and as we turned around, Tanner could see a nice bull running through the timber straight at us! He encouraged me to get an arrow knocked as the bull beared down on us. With one opportunity to draw, I brought the PSE to full draw as the bull stepped into the opening.....and wouldn't you know he put on the breaks with his vitals behind some branches. I held as long as I could, with the bull just 20 yards away, but he never moved...until I let off. When he spooked, we noticed a second bull had come in with him. Six bulls in the first hour of season - couldn't have asked for more. Tanner later told me he thought the bull was going to run us over, but he held his composure nicely and learned what bow hunting is all about! I told him the best thing is, we get to do it all over again next weekend...can't wait!!!!!

Sounds like they are getting fired up in MT. I did a little scouting this past weekend---our rut is still a little ways away. Sounds like you are starting off your son on the right foot. CB
