Guest DBaker Posted September 9, 2006 Report Share Posted September 9, 2006 I am just starting to get into duck hunting and reading about information now and watching telvision shows, one thing in common that every duck hunter has more than one call? Does each call have a special purpose? What would be the normal calls to have around your neck? I have been looking into Quack Head and Duck Commander for possiable first calls. The usual suspects are a single or double reed mallard, drake whistle, woodie call, goose flute and a short reed goose call. Everyone blows a call differently. Try to find the ones you are most comfortable and confident in. Some calls work better as long range or hail calls while others excel for close in work. There are a lot of high end calls out there that have killed countless numbers of birds, but a few that I have always had god luck with are the Haydel and Mallardtone calls. DU_man_84 Posted September 9, 2006 Report Share Posted September 9, 2006 Re: Calls 101... i use calls a guy here in illinois makes customingly and i love them, i got a call for a loud ringing hail call, call for in close soft quacks and chuckles, and my short reed goose call, also carry a drake wistle and woody call, for a begginner i really think the buck gardner double nasty II is a great call, but like billkay said every hunter sounds different on every call and sometimes its the call that fits you, your gonna have to experiment, i dont know how many calls i bought when i first started hunting Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Woodie Call (Duck) 5. Short Reed (Goose) Are their any books or web sites that would be good to explain each of the calls and when and how to use them? If you are just buying random calls to find the right one, look for those with the CD's. They really will help you out. A CD does a much better job of explaining ticket, ticket, ticket, than a person or book. As far as the goose call, a flute may be easier to start with. [/ QUOTE ] i agree completely here, also jeff foiles callen geese 2.0 and calling ducks 2.0 is a good instructional, also barnie calef has some good tips on calling ducks and geese, and like billkay said if your just starting out i would probably recommend a flute style goose call for now Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You should just pick up a call or two and try they see what you like and go from there. Most calls come with instructions and there are also manycd's and videos to teach you how to use the call. I really like the calls from Foiles Migrators and the calls by Buck Gardner. I currently have a single and double reed duck call a 6-in-1 whistle.
