Update on the Kia

We tore into the Kia this weekend to see the total damage. I'm already thinking I have to replace a motor... tongue.gif

Thank God it wasn't that bad. When they say the belts have to be changed at 60k look more toward 50k. The timing belt was almost slick. It looked more like a fan belt. Half of the teeth were laying loose in the cover.

Two of the valves were in pieces. The piston had two holes large enough to stick your finger in. Literally. The head looked like it had been beat with a hatchet. It was ate to pieces the Valve Guides were both broken in that cylinder.

Basically the head would have to be ground back smooth, new guides, valves, etc. Luckily Dad found a place that rebuilds heads and mails them out to you. You take your old head and sent it right back to them. These heads come ready to bolt on with the Cams in place, new valves, etc. After I get my core charge back ill have $370 in a guaranteed head. I can handle that.

One piston needs replaced (obviously). Luckily I think we can drop the pan and change the rod and piston from underneath. The piston is roughly $85. Ill have to replace the ring too but all and all I'm looking at roughly $550 to get it back on the road. That and the fact it will only take one day to get it all put back together really set my mind at ease.

The Valves were in tiny little pieces on top of the piston. We figured the cylinder would be ruined. It was actually in great shape. It has a few small scratches but nothing we cant hone out. Honestly they would probably be fine as is but your thumbnail catches a little.

Anyway, so the weekend of the 23rd she will be back on the road. After doing tons of Research we found countless Kia motors with 50k down to 20k miles that were in worse shape. A guy that sales Kia parts said they are notorious for trashing their own motors before 50k miles.

Fix it up, and then get out from under it and buy something else wink.gif

Thats the plan. By the time I do all the work ill have basically rebuilt the engine. I am going to have to put a few more miles on it to get my money back out of the parts. Then its history and I wont look back. Ill be upgrading to either a Civic or a Nissan.
