My two biggest fears are needles and flying/stinking/biting insects--bees, wasps, etc. Essentially, anything I can't immediately identify is a "bee" whether or not completely accurate. LOL Though Wisconsin isn't necessarily known as a haven for such critters, yellow jackets this time of year are ALL OVER the place. I decided it was time to reclaim my deck--the outdoors--and the end of my summer and early fall by exacting revenge on these--things. I found an idea for a yellow jacket trap online. My first attempt was pretty good, catching about 20 of these things after a week. I decided to do some tweaking and now have my own secret yellow-jacket catching/killing formula. Here are two images of my trap after a week. Even though they're dead, they kind of give me the "willies" but I am tempted to count 'em up...LOL! Start out with a 20 ounce bottle of water Drink about 8 ounces or so Add 2 drops yellow and one drop red food coloring Add AT LEAST three heaping tablespoons of sugar Shake well Next thing to remember--yellow jackets not only like sweet stuff, they like meat too... Added two small pieces of hot dogs Next thing--we all know how much they like beer I added instead a couple ounces of white wine (Riesling) Then I made 3 holes in the sidenear the top of the bottle. I suggest is slits in the shape of an X and then pushed inwards. This way the yellow jackets go in but can't figure out how to get out. The exit then looks too small to them. The final thing--and I'm not sure that it really matters is time. My thinking is that since yellow jackets eat other insects, they probably dine on their dead friends too. I found a nest in the ground in my back yard a couple of weeks ago. So I poured gas down the hole ( quickly) backed waaaaaaaaay up and lit a match and made a yellow-jacket bonfire.
