Tom2008 Posted September 21, 2006 Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 Ok I looked at the forecast this weekend and the wind is blowing NNE and NE all weekend. The deer come from the South on the trail. I washed all my clothes in scent-free detergent. When I get up north I hang them outside. When I wake up I take a scent-free shower and put scent-free deodorant on. Then I put a light coat of Scent-Free spray on my clothes again. I only get to hunt on 40 acers and the spot I am in holds my best chances for seeing deer. I only get to hunt weekends so when I go up I hunt no matter what. It doesn't spook Texas whitetail even if they smell it but I don't know if it will work up there. Sounds like you will be hunting a very tight wind. Depending on the trail leading to your stand, they may come in from the downwind side as they work up the trail. Never know till you give it a shot. If you can, try to figure out another stand location to work a South wind in the same area. This will give you two options. I know this might be too late for this hunt but you may get away with setting something up mid day before leaving to go home? Even if you think this spot is your best spot to see deer, sometimes it's a good alternative to find a South wind stand elsewhere close by. Don't forget to keep the bottoms of your hunting boots scent free as well as cleaning your bow and release. With a wind this tight, you have to think of everything including your equipment. The less the wind blows, the more the thermals will work in your favor in the morning. Obviously the thermals will be against you in the afternoon. With the deer coming from the south and a NE wind they won't be directly downwind of you if that's in fact what they will do. Sounds like you're pretty scent concious. I share the same feelings about that. The main scent problem you'll have is your breath. Many hunters disregard that but when you think about how much air you're pumping out, it becomes a serious scent concern. That's why I always use a charcoal lined face mask to breath through. [/ QUOTE ] See I'm hunting on one trail and they only go one direction on it and that is the only trail they use on the side of the clearing I'm on. The trees are way to thick behind and there are no trails for another 50 to 60 yards behind me. Acuweater.com says that the winds are at 8 to 10 mph. I have learned probably everything that I know from the people of this forum(Thanks Everyone) I'm trying to get my first so I want to give it all I got. I want everything to work out this year. Be patient and only hunt when the wind is right and you won't regret it. I don't know about you but nothing makes me sicker than seeing that white tail bounding away from me. You can do your best to be downwind of deer, but they do not always walk where thet are supposed to, especially bucks. I am a scent elimination freak myself, and I have had deer get downwind and have had very good luck with not getting busted too much. I say go for it!
