shot a doe

well guys, I went out for the first time tonight. The weather had been real nasty today but about 4 pm it cleared up to blue skies. I was glad and so i went out. Around 7 or so, I had 2 yearlings and a big doe come down a trail about 15 yards from my stand. I let them walk. I did grunt to them and got them to circle around and go into the alfalfa field I was hunting over. Later, I had about 20 minutes until quiting time, and I had about 8 deer out in the field. I grunt some more and got them to move right to me. (Now my goal this year was to wait out on a buck) but I descided if a doe came in close enough, I'd give her a wack. They came in right under my stand, and I'm like "this can't be happening!" One came in at 5 yards and I came to full draw. I had to wait about a minute until she made that last step forward. I released and she ran. Later I got down and examined the arrow, which was covered in blood. Long story short, I called my friend and him and I tracked her for a couple hours. The blood trail wasn't very long, and we're guessing the shot was far and back. I must have pulled on the shot. I feel real bad cuz I hate to waste a deer like that. But I'll be out tomorrow and try and find her. Hopefully it doesn't rain.

Re: shot a doe

It might sound counterintuitive, but after my last couple of shots, I think I'll be letting those super close deer get out there a little bit, if possible. Hit one at about 5 yards just like you. She was quartering away very slightly and I aimed a little high just behind her front, right shoulder. After I found and gutted her, I realized I never got an exit wound b/c the arrow stopped dead on her sternum, just right of center - even with a 2" cutting diameter, I never came close to the opposite side lung. Luckily, the shot went right through the heart, and she went about 40 yards, but that wasn't my plan.

Good luck, sure hope you find her!!

Re: shot a doe

Gl..My buddy did the exact same thing on opening night....We got it on video and watched it and he hit her right in the middle of the body quartering to him...She was only about 5 yards away...she barely bled and he tracked her that night for about 250 yards only finding blood every 10 yards or so....We left her that night and it rained....when we went back out we had a plan. Most gut shot deer will want to get to water b/c their guts are on fire and they get dehydrated quickly from that...We also surveyed the land once it was light and most deer will take the easiest escape route when hurt(i.e. downhill) we followed the deer trail she was on for another 300 yards out across a grass field and it came to a low spot with a bedding area. We found her bedded just on the outside of the thicket against it dead....

check and see where the closest water is and compare that to the bedding area and I'm willing to bet that's where she went. Gl and let us know.
