Gator
I am thinking of getting a different knife for gutting/skinning, and not sure what to get. I want something that is fixed blade, EASY to sharpen, and not overly big. I have used an Old Timer pocket knife the last several years, but would like something different. I looked at some Gerber blades yesterday, but wanted to get some differing opnions and suggestions
Buckslayer
Re: Knife I'd go with something made from carbon steel, or equally tough, with a drop point blade and a gut hook. Overall length of 3 - 4 inches would suit me... Just me though! Good luck finding something you like Gator. I'd stick to the major brands, some of which have lifetime guarantees! Gator
Re: Knife That is the style I am looking at, drop point blade, definately a gut hook. Most likely will end up with a Gerber, I REALLY like their blades

Jeramie
Re: Knife Yes you do. However, I have an old timer with a gut hook and have never had to do a lot of sharpening. No more then they are used they stay pretty sharp.
Tecumseh
Re: Knife I have old timer I have to sharpen the blade from time to time but the gut hook is still sharp and it's been used a lot.
Guest CMitchell
Re: Knife KaBar Precision Hunter. I think I went 2 years without sharpening it. Great little knife. That said, I use the Browning FDT 3 blade.

Jeramie
Re: Knife As far as quality I think it would be hard to beat a CutCo. Their kitchen knives are SCARY sharp. I havent bought one of their hunting knives yet but its in the plans.. Again, You can not go wrong with a Case!
OJR
Re: Knife I use one of the Remington Big Game knives. It is great. It has 1 blade and a gut hook-saw combination! Easy to sharpen and it holds an edge pretty good. It is a folding knife and comes with a sheath! I have used this one for several years and I don't know how many deer I have gutted and skinned with it! They cost about $45.00!
RangerClay
Re: Knife This is what I have for a gutting knife and it holds an edge great! My Knife Gator, have you ever received a Smokey Mountain Knifeworks catalog??

bulldawg
Re: Knife I've used Buck, Gerber, Old Timer/Schrade, etc. I just bought a Case early this year, and it almost cut me just looking at it.... The blades on this folder are super sharp. Dawg

AJ
Re: Knife I used the standard Buck, Gerber, Case, Schrade, etc knives for many years. One day I stepped up to Cold Steel. I will never buy another 440 stainless steel knife ever agein. They are not that great. I prefer AUS8A, CarbonV, or a damascus.
okiedog
Re: Knife I'am a CV(chrome vanadium) steel guy. That was the original Case pocket knife steel. The CV blades are easy to sharpen and really hold their edge. Have to keep a little oil on them for protection though. Alot of Case knives are still in production with CV steel, and also Damascus steel.
