Re: 300 short mag

Ballistically, its a 300 Winchester Magnum. Recoil is similar. Will it do anything a 300 Win Mag won't? Not really, unless you count fitting in a short action. Out to 300 yards, you will not see any difference on deer over a 30-06 though.

Re: 300 short mag

I own both a .300 Short Mag and a .300 Win Mag. The recoil in the short mag is quite a bit lighter, and my short mag is actually a lighter gun then my win mag. (Browning BLR vs. Remington 700). My brother has the same gun as I do in a .270 Win and you can't tell the difference in recoil between the two. It's comfortable standing, but when I was sighting it in, you obviously have to lean into it more, in the sitting position so that was a bit harder on the shoulder. I shot 15 rounds in a row, then I took a break. grin.gif The ammo is a bit pricey, but other then that I love the gun. It shoots good groups and it's a lot nicer with the short action it has and the stubby ammo. The cartridges are about the same length as a .308, but about as fat as a Win mag cartridge, maybe a touch bigger.

Best of luck with your choice DWL. cool.gif

Re: 300 short mag

I purchased a Browing Abolt in the 300 wssm cartridge last year for a mule deer hunt. I think its a touch big for whitetail to be honest. Maybe a little too much gun. But it did shoot very good on the bench, and I ended up taking a nice mulie at 356 yrds. I have several Browning Abolts, and just feel they are one of the best for the money out there. The 300 wssm really doest not have a lot of recoil for that light of a gun. Very easy to shoot.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard 300 WSM the recoil is not bad at all and with Factory ammo it put's them practically in the same hole at 150 yards.

I've got the same gun except mine is a sporter. I've tried 3 different types of ammunition and bullet weights and cant get it to shoot any better than a four in group at 100 yards. i am sure it is the gun and not the caliber though.

Re: 300 short mag

I like the 300 but it has a stout recoil to it. I zeroed a 270 WSM shortly after the 300 and found the 270 to have considerably less. Recoil isn't a big deal to me but the major contrast was interesting. I want to try the 7mm next.

Re: 300 short mag

I have 2 .300 WSM's and a .300 Win Mag and would not give one up for the other. My Sav. .300 Win Mag has more felt recoil then the M-70 Supper Shadow or my Tikka T-3 Lite, the Sav still has a lot less felt recoil then all other .300 Win Mags I have shot.

I am getting 3,109 fps with 74.8 gr of powder with a 165 gr Sierra HPBT out of my Sav. .300 Win Mag, I am getting 3,098 fbs with 66.0 gr of the same powder and bullet in my M-70.

I love them both (.300 Win Mag and .300 WSM) and the only thing I would do to the Tikka would make it a short action but the gun is doing great, I have 2 shot groups with 3 rounds in the same hole at 100 yds. I need to work on my trigger finger some more and get it down to all 5 rounds in one hole.
