hoyt19
So the story goes a little like this. Last November I got pictures of a good deer on my trail camera, and spent November till season end hunting him. I saw him 3 times, all out of range, and once standing on the drive to the farm. All summer I never spotted him, and he hadn't shown up on any of my cameras in the timber. I really thought he might have been killed. That was until today. About 5:15 I saw him. He was roughly 60 yards up wind of my stand, making a scrape. The cover was so thick I thought it was another very large deer, however the color of his rack, and a tell tale scar proved that it was him. Anyways in an effort to bring him into range, I took out my Primos can and flipped once. His head shot up and was looking in my direction through the brush. It seemed to me it looked like he liked what he heard so I did it again. Much to my dismay, he took a few bounds, tail down, and like that was gone. I was down wind, with a steady wind to my face, and there was a lot of cover between us. The only thing I can think of is he didnt see the source of the sound and didnt want anything to do with an invisable doe. Im at a loss. He wasnt where I saw him last year, I dont know where he came from or where he went. What should I do now?

He was very comfortable where he was before I called. It was after I did that he get nervous.
jbeck
Re: Any advice? could be you weren't the first one to use the can on him. Besides, the does aren't really going yet. On young bucks you can get away with that, but that old boy knows when the does are ready. JMO, good luck catching up with him.
Guest samueljm
Re: Any advice? it probably isnt the best time to use the can yet and he knows that. Just wait for the rut and then use it and he will probably come in and give you a shot
TOMSD5
Re: Any advice? as the others stated to early for the can to work properly....i would use a domanate buck scent and start using some light grunts...this may get his attention....but like stated above he didn't get that big by being dunb... wtnhunt
Re: Any advice? May be an educated deer. Some deer may become educated to calls and might possibly become somewhat call shy.
Guest chronic
Re: Any advice? young buck grunts have always worked for me during the early season. with this he is thinking that a smaller buck is comming to set up a territory for the rut, and he wont like this so he might possibly come to investigate. good luck man. SpcNape
Re: Any advice? I tried a grunt on a large deer a week ago, he did the same thing... bolted as soon as I gave the grunt. I was confused myself, just like you everything was in my favor plus I was twenty feet in a tree above him. I just thought that in this early time of the season he didn't want to be sociable.
