Quality Optics

Thought I'd ask opinions before I spend a bunch of money. I'm looking at Steiner Peregrine's in 8.5 X 50. Supposed to be excellent in low light, and virtually indestructible according to a buddy of mine who has 2 different sets of Steiners.

Any experiences or comments? They're around $1000, so is there maybe something else in the price range that someone would recommend?

Re: Quality Optics

I've never used Steiner products but they are German so the quality is probably really good. For 1,000$ I'd stick with more popular well known European brands with great reputations. Zeiss, Swarovski & Leica. They all make a heck of a binocular.

For 1k Zeiss has a 10x50 thats really good. I myself have a pair of 10x42 Kahles & they are a great set of glass. I love the winged cup eyepiece that block out all stray light when looking through them. I got mine at a great price well under 1,000 bucks though.

Re: Quality Optics

I have an older pair of Steiner binocs that I keep for a spare or my son uses them when he comes in from college. I've had to send them back twice to have the prisms re-aligned and each time Steiner charged me $150. My Steiner binocs won't take much banging around without the prisms getting knocked out of line. They really don't come close in comparison either, especially in low light as my Swarovski binocs. I bought my Swarovski binocs about 10 years ago when I sent off my Steiner binocs to get fixed the 2nd time.

I agree with FSU. For that kind of money I'd look at Swarovski, Zeis, Leica, or Kahles.
