Should the Dad be angry?

A guy was taking a 15 year old boy home after he spent the night with the guy's son(also did some hunting that day). Well the guy has a tendency of following too close to other cars and BAM. There was a accident. Well while the deputy sheriff was there he discovered that the guy had a warrant out for a unpaid fine and arrested him. The other driver was told to go since this was a priority. No accident report was done and the drivers were not checked for licenses or registration. Then the deputy took the guy away to jail.

Where was the 15 year old? Left alongside a dark country road.(The guy tried to contactl the parents from jail but was unable to make the call and hounded the deputy all the way to jail about the boy)) The boy ended up walking 2 miles to town and finally got in touch with his parents.

His Dad then went to the sheriffs office to file a complaint about his son being left so. Well the deputy was there and there was a verbal confrontation. Another deputy got in between the Dad and deputy until the deputy was forced to leave the area.No complaint was allowed to be filed at this time.

The Dad is outraged at the deputy's actions and should he be?

The Dad is not angry with the guy because circumastances were taken out of his control. (The guy is a freind and has said he did not realize there was a fine or warrant) Should Dad be upset with the freind also?

In NY accident reports are not required for minor property damage accidents that do not have injuries involved. Not sure about which state you are speaking about though, but this is probably the same situation.

This would be something that would upset me and I think a valid reason for a complaint. (barring maybe if the 15 year old told the deputy that he would prefer to walk)...still not what I would have done though.

I am real curious as to what would have been said by the father or the deputy that could have turned this into a verbal confrontation. If the second deputy was of the same rank, he probably, by his departmental policy, is required to refer the complainant to a supervisor, as in most agencies officers of the same rank are not allowed to take complaints on fellow employees.

One, the father should be a bit upset as the guy was involved in an accident with his son in the vehicle due to his tendancy to "follow too closely". I have a tough time believing that the guy did not realize there was a fine or a warrant. Could it be true?? I guess so, but I doubt it. If it was a fine...he must have had some contact with the police that was not taken care of in court. If it was an arrest warrant...he must have done something illegal and I surely would be interested in finding out exactly what he has been accused of and then consider that when I was determining what the entire outcome of this should be and whether or not to be angry with a lone deputy on the shoulder of a dark road with a subject with an arrest warrant that had at least one other male subject, possibly two, that could have potentially ended in injury or death to the deputy if these 2 or 3 subjects decided to attack him. Not saying it would have, but the majority of LEO's killed on the job are not from major cities, but from smaller communities.

Re: Should the Dad be angry?

The deputy should have made arraignments to secure a ride for the fifteen year old. As soon as subject #1 is handcuffed and in the back of the cruiser phone calls should have been made. It would have been the deputies responsibility if anything had happened to the 15 year old.

Regardless of ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL that other stuff.............the fact that a deputy left a minor child on the side of the road in the dark is outrageous and YES, the father should be IRATE. mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif I'd be letting the whole world know about this, including the local news.

Re: Should the Dad be angry?

Id be furious and file a complaint with a different department or something ... unless hes in a state where a 15 year old isn't a minor then by all means the deputy screwed up ... as far as the other stuff in the jail oh well ... and as far as his buddy ... well stuff happens ...no harm no fowl if the kid wouldnt have had to walk 2 miles ...

Re: Should the Dad be angry?

I am the Dad.

A discussion with the friend was done. All matters were talked about and cleared. I have been guilty of following too closely a time or two which helped me forgive him for being a dummy. The warrant was for a $4 unpaid fine. Yep...only 4 dollars. I can understand how that would be unknown. I once had a warrant for my arrest and did not know about it. I had got rid of my house and there was a housing violation citation for it before the deed was switched. Like my friend....I had moved and never received a notice.

But neither one of has left a youngster alone on a dark country road nor would we.

I will be going back to the Sheriff's office tomorrow morning to get this matter cleared up. A talk with Sheriff hopefully will be had. I think it will help a little since we know the Sheriff because of the boys sports and that the other son had dated the Sheriff's granddaughter and is friends with his grandson and has ate at his home. shocked.gif

I have had more time to think and cool down. I can forgive the deputy and hope he can allow this to make him a more efficient officer.

btw....I am not sorry for the remarks I made to him once he decided to argue with me and disparage me and my son. Hey some of them were pretty good ....they actually made my wife laugh later.

Plus I was the one that was supposed to be the cool head going to the office. confused.gif

$4 warrant! They must really be chicken so-and-so's back there!! frown.gifmad.giffrown.gif

I don't blame you for getting hot! More power to you! I hope everything turns out for the best! laugh.gif

The courts issue warrants for unpaid fines...not the Sheriffs department. When a warrant is issued, it does not tell the amount of the fine that is due on the warrant. This comes out at the arraignment when the judge reviews tha paperwork. An arrest warrant is an arrest warrant. I'm not defending the deputy for the mistake of having the kid walk, but he wouldn't know what the dollar amount of the warrant would have been while standing on the shoulder of the road. The deputy screwed up no doubt if he in fact knew the child was only 15. Hopefully you guys can work it all out though.

Re: Should the Dad be angry?

What is the age of adulthood in your state? I bet it isn't 15....the child should have been taken to the police station if no one could be found to pick him up. Period. He could have ridden in the front of the cruiser.

All other issues about your friend, etc are incidental to the event.

Never should a 15 year old be left on the side of the road. PERIOD.

I would be writing a formal complaint against the deputy, especially since he bowed up. Had he apologized and said "you know, I was a bonehead and not thinking" I could have let it slide with an understanding of where he went wrong.

Re: Should the Dad be angry?

A $4 dollar warrant? what the. When I was a deputy we would just tell the person to go in and take care of it within 72 hours or we would be back to get him. Difference in some areas.

Kind of sounds like a collection agency. Got turned over 1 time for 30 cents to one of those. Cost them more for the stamp then it would have to just write it off. Sad part is I thought I had paid it, but had filled out the check incorrectly on the original bill.

Re: Should the Dad be angry?

I would be furious! I can understand your friend not knowing about the warrant, and I can understand the officer taking him in.(he doesn't know it's for 4 $). However the fact that he left your son on the road and then made those comments(I can just imagine)to you. He should definetly at least have his hands slapped. You and your son did nothing wrong, you shouldn't have deserved the comments and he NEVER should have left your son to find his way home. Luckily it worked out all right.
