Re: \'06 archery buck...

First....thanks everyone!

Ok the story, well I was on stand for the evening hunt...seen a couple of yearlings at first then nothing for some time. Every now and then doing some grunting and using the bleat can. I then (about and hour before dark) hear something crashing above me. I'm sitting in a 10' ladder along a gas well road...its a stand my buddy uses for his boy in rifle season.

Finally I see antlers coming through the brush on the other side of the road about 40 yards away. It seemed like forever for him to come the last little bit. I had ranged a large tree along the side of the gas well road (28 yards). I was hoping that he'd come on my side of it. When he finally committed to crossing the road...I drew and stopped him at around 35 yards. Since it was wide open down the lane...I felt comfortable shooting this far.

He turned his head looking away from me...and I released. Don't know for sure yet what happened but my arrow went right behind the front leg and just under his chest. Dinged off the side of the road and bolted.

He didn't go far...so I waited...I was about 99% sure I missed him clean...but not positive. He then came back out on the road about 75 yards away. With bino's...I could see that I in fact missed him clean. Sucked...but also very happy that I didn't wound him.

Now about 1/2 til dark...I hear some noise coming up this dry creek bed in front of me. Turns out this love sick buck was coming back! I got ready and he stopped with his head and front shoulder behind a large tree at about 18 yards broadside. I thought for a sec. to try and sneak an arrow just past the tree into his vitals...then thought...naw...two more steps and I got a clear broadside shot. I was starting to shake from holding at full draw so long...I either had to break down of tuck the arrow along side of the tree. Decided that there was a little room to the side of the stand...so I shuffled my feet as far as I could get to get as much of a target as I could.

Well, just as I did that (still at full draw) a doe blows right behind me...she was standing on the gas well road at a mere 8 yards...never knew she was there. She bolted and the buck quickly turned to head back down the creek bed....NO SHOT!

I grunted at him and he turned again and came up to the road. Came back out on the road just on the other side of the 28 yard Maple. I put the 30 yard pin on him and shot. Everything looked and felt good...I knew he was hit. He ran about 50 yards up the hill and stood there. I watched him with the bino's waiting for him to fall over...but he never did. He just sorta disappeared...didn't crash down...didn't run...couldn't even hear with all the leaves on the ground him walking away.

I waitied til dark and went to look at my arrow...found white hair, chunks of something and the arrow smelled bad. I knew right then it was a gut shot. Made me sick...I elected to let him go til the next morning. Hard decision to make knowing that he was hurt and suffering. Couldn't sleep that night!

Got back out there at first light...Pete and my brother helped with the tracking. Found some good blood (dark...but good, thinking may have clipped the liver).

A few hours later and a few 100 yards the trail ended....we started looking for a direction in this over grown scrub field. Finally picked up the trail again and found him lying in the field (about 20 yards from someone else's ladder stand wink.gif).

Don't know where the white hair came from because it didn't exit low...straight through the body. Those 2 blade Rage heads made a heck of a hole and I'm thankful I waitied to go after him. He wasn't real stiff...so he hadn't been dead long! Wasn't my best shooting...but recovered the deer and I'm pleased with him.

So a word to the wise...if you know you made a gut shot...give that deer plenty of time to expire and you'll find it. I shot him at or around 5:30 pm on Sat. and found him around 11am on Sun. and he wasn't dead real long!
