The rain doesn't affect the rut. It affects the physical breeding but it does not affect hormones of the animal.

Similar to to much wind.

There is an ideal if the majority of your does are going to get bread during the first estrus cycle, pending a fair doe to buck ratio.

Re: HOW DOES RAIN EFFECT THE RUT???

but when you combine high winds and rain /sleet/ drizzle and then cold temps, it will put a damper on deer movement. the does are not dumb. they do not like to move in those conditions.

i hunted in those exact conditions on friday here in iowa and it was no fun at all. saw 3 deer, but all i could last was 4 hours. then i went home.

30+ mph gusts and freezing rain and sleet and rain. it was just to dangerous on stand even with a safety belt.

in the past i have never hunted in this kind of conditions. until last monday night. i wanted to give it a try. so i saw 7 bucks and 8 does. they really like that light driazzle and rain.

but having it wash blood sign away is a fear of mine. i guess if you make a perfect shot, then its easy tracking, but if you mess up, then its a nightmare.

i would say light rain and drizzle is ok if you are able to make perfect shots resulting in easy tracking jobs.

Shoot Strong

weather aint gonna stop the rut..just the hunters

Isn't that the truth. The rut will never stop but it's, the ruts, affects can be slowed as far as breeding sucess is concerned.

There are years when I pray for rain. Fewer hunters get out when it's raining and this prolongs a deer lifespan.

Then when it snows and gets cold, most hunters, not the ones on here, but most hunt a few days and then complain about the cold and the lack of deer.

That is when I go out and wack'em. At least so I dream. A man has the right to dream. ..LOL

Honestly, that is exactly what I do.

So while I hunted yesterday and saw 4 bucks and 4 does on state property, one buck at 9 feet running by me, and no human footprints and was unsuccessful (no ethical shots) ,it was a success.

The rain is really slowing the dry weather hunters down.

Woohooo!!!

Wait one minute. I told you I was going to the Boyer Lake area and changed my mind the night before. Must be you figured I backed out and opted for Isle. Like how could you see that many deer at Boyer Lake? You can't. Anyway, good guess!!

Well, since you and Dave brought me there recently, I've been haunted with the place. Really haunted!!

I'm shaking right now just thinking about the deer sign.

Literally, I think I am having heart palapitations. I'll be there this Saturday. I'm not sure where you guys are hunting but I'll be there with my blaze orange arms. LOL

Oh, I'll be on the east end of the field. Should you have a change of plans give me a call.

BTW: The rut I think is in full swing there, probably just ending though. I walked down a runway at 11 and then walked down the same at 3 PM to see a brand new rub, that totally destroyed this tree.

I got blown at once. After examining myself I found out why!! mad.giffrown.gif Never saw the deer. I ditched the stinky item in one area and left it there until the end of the day. Never got blown at again. It pays to pay strict attention to items that can absorb scent. Even on rainy rutting days!

Re: HOW DOES RAIN EFFECT THE RUT???

Hello people! :} New to the site and loving it! Just browsing around all the talk here.

I used to train K-9 Units, and as far as tracking dogs, they do much better tracking after a rain, during a light rain, or during a good frost. Most people think the moisture will wash away a scent, but that is just the opposite. Scent will kinda float on top of the moisture, similiar to what a drop of oil does! Interesting, huh? I used to laugh at the old movies when the bloodhounds lost the trail of the bad guys that ran through a creek! Scent, under dry conditions, will evaporate quicker than when there is higher levels of humidity (and it doesn't have to be a hot summer to have humidity). Ever notice a dog or a deer that doesn't put his nose all the way to the ground? That's because the scent is hovering about 12 to 15 inches off the ground.

When I first learned this in K-9 trainings, I started watching the bucks, and noticed their heads dropped about knee high as they scent followed the does.

Just thought someone might find this interesting or useful !!
