Hunting equipment prices

I was watching a show the other day that supported Redhead catalog. I can't think of the name of the show off the top of my head, but this came to my mind and it kind of irritated me. I am sitting there watching the show and it shows the hunter and states "so and so is using such and such piece of equipment", and it shows them flip through a catalog and go to the item to show a close up of it. Being I am in the market for a pair of binoculars, (which is what they made reference to), I immedietly got out my catalog and looked at the ones the pro was using. Turns out, they are a cool $999.00 for a pair of binoculars! He was not hunting open range, he was in the woods. The binos were 10X42 Leupold Gold Ring.

I got thinking to myself....the majority of the hunters are probably middle class, and although I can see $700+ for a bow or rifle, not many guys that hunt deer in a normally woodland setting can afford to drop a grand on a pair of binoculars. I realize they do it to get you interested but talk about shooting for the moon! Why don't they ever show a guy with maybe a $150.00 pair of binoculars, and they make it a point to tell what he is using? Thats my type of hunting....I know for a fact, I will NEVER own a $1000.00 pair of binoculars or a Swarovski scope. Maybe I am way off the mark here, but I don't think many hunters have $1000.00 to drop on a pair of binoculars to see 100 yards. blush.gifconfused.gif

Re: Hunting equipment prices

Agree 1000%.

Like you I can see dropping $1000 on a entire bowhunting rig, or rifle/scope combo, but not for a set of binos or lazer range finder, spotting scope, etc...

Like you I feel $150 is reasonable for those items.

Yes I have feilds that range out to and beyold 500 yards if you sit in certain places but still.

Thats a lot of scratch for a set of binos.

Plus I seriously doubt the hunter showcased actually paid for them out of pocket like we would have to do.

Would it be nice to own them?

Yes it would.

I would use them everytime out if a sponser gave them to me and asked me to "push" them on my hunting show.

But I dont have sponses or a show.

I have a wife that keeps close attention to the bank acct.

LOL

Good post...

Re: Hunting equipment prices

it is obvious who they are targeting ... and to be honest its not the middle class ... like you said its way over kill for what he was doing ... I dont like that show either .. everything is staged way to much .. they spend more time with outtakes then they do the actual hunt ... its almost like a comercial for hunting with a BPS television show ..

I bet that they are not!!! grin.gif Most on here are probably but how many don't even know this site exists? Generally the closer you get to "middle class" the more you think "everyone" is middle class.

We live in a screwed up era. Once the TV was a middle class item. Now even the families that are classified as poverty level have one. Oh, they even have 4 wheelers and snow machines too and the internet! Yet they still live of some sort of "public assistance"

Maybe they should be classified as middle class??? smirk.gifconfused.gifcrazy.gifmad.gif

But, I do agree with you. That is a lot for a scope!!! At least for my pocketbook. I own two cars, a few boats a house and have lots of pets. $1000 pair of binos is way too much.

I bet there is some guy out there that is dirt poor and has one though. Sort of like the 4-wheeler in his driveway!shocked.gif

I would not mind a gift from someone for a scope from US Optics though. wink.gif

Currently I use a pr of Binos that were made in the 1970's. I wonder what that same pair could sell for now. Speaking of quality that is.

Re: Hunting equipment prices

It's funny how some people that will not consider spending $ on premium equipment that will last them the rest of their hunting careers, will drop thousands on aftermarket accessories like rims, tires, stereos, video games, and other things that will last a few years and depreciate by the microsecond. Or spending a grand or more on an archery setup that will be replaced in a year or two.

Within the last couple years, I have bought Zeiss, Kahles, and Swarovski scopes for some of my guns. I just bought a Zeiss Spotting Scope and a pair of Leica Geovid binoculars. I stepped up from the el cheapo binocs to a set of Nikon Monarch ATBs, back in 1998, and now up to the Geovids.

Hunters are spending more and more money on hunting equipment and accessories now days. Look at how many outfitters and guides are fully booked years in the future.

Re: Hunting equipment prices

Call them cheap if you want AJ, but not everyone has money growing on trees. My $250 Nikons are going last just as long as your $1000 scopes or binos. and if i see fit to buy another pair in the next 15 years, they will still be $250 "el cheapos". even if i did have the money for them, i doubt i would spend it on them. no need for it here, heck, in the areas i hunt, i could get by with a $20 pair of binos. If i had $1000 in my hand, that i absolutly HAD to spend on hunting equipment, blowing it all on one scope or one set of binos would be thet last thing on my mind. i would rather spend the money where it is going to matter when that deer steps in to the shooting lane. the $1000 i spent on binoculars aren't going to help me then, the $1000 Archery setup or the $1000 gun/scope setup are going to, along with the practice i out into using them. If you can afford these things for yourself, then thats fine, great, grand, wonderful. But those "el cheapos" are considered top of the line to some of us.

Re: Hunting equipment prices

Man, I couldn't drop that much on binoculars. They just aren't important enough for me when I'm hunting. I do shoot my Switchback XT every day when I'm home.

Bought my Dad some Leupold Wind River binocs a couple years ago and they seem more than adequate for what we use them.

If I were an out west hunter who glasses all the time, I could see it...but not for the way we hunt.
