I was a city boy, and just moved to a place that's wooded and my biggest fear is to get lost in the woods and become "Tarzan". So I was wondering if this hand held GPS would get me back to my car or house. Thinking of buying one that not to costly. Please give me some names of some good systems.

Thanks

Re: Do GPS Systems work in the woods.

Mine has an "internal antenna", and in heavy growth, sometimes I can't get a signal. They say the external antennas work better, but I don't know. I usually just walk 100 yards or so and I have a signal again. I have never got somewhere I could get out of with it though. I am very satisfied with mine.

Yes, though the forest canopy does have an affect on reception. This time of year you are more prone to problems with cirrus clouds than anything.

There aren't many brands that are junk and you will find that everyone has a favorite brand.

I prefer Garmin. The particular one that you chose will probably have to do with your uses and your pocketbook.

Get a compas and learn how to use it and you'll never be lost again. GPS's are a great tool but are not foolproof either. Signal loss and dead batteries are the two major problems that a user will run into. Most major brands are good and it just a matter of how much $$$ you want to spend. NEVER ENTER THE BIG WOODS WITH JUST A GPS!! Always have a compas also.

Yes it will. I purchased the new Garmin 530 and the thing is awesome. I hunt the north woods of Maine, and the woods are thick up there..ONly have lost signal one time, and when the unit re-aquires, its very fast. Have the topo maps loaded on, a really nice feature. Its a bit pricey, but well worth the cash.
