Tom2008
This will be my first year and I was wondering what kind of gear I will need to be successful. What do you use during the spring turkey season? Thanks for any replys.
Guest alex30808
Re: What do you take with you? Brother, The first thing I pack in my vest is my Bible...Cause if the birds are not receptive to my calls...I want to make sure I am receptive to HIS calls. Being that I am a cusotm call maker...naturaly I take two of three of my pots...and about 15 strikers...LOL...a different striker on the same pot will produce a different tone or pitch. I use a few mouth calls and I carry a few custom box calls I have aquired over the years. TOILET PAPER!!!! TP is a must in all vests!!!! LOL... I also carry a decoy or two....they make for great seat cushins!!!! I also carry a Primos Slick Stick...it's a call contitioner...and is a very valuable pc of equipment that will only set you back about $6.00 or so....GET ONE!!! Strut10
Re: What do you take with you? As little as possible. Used to carry a bunch of stuff. But I've found I can hunt "light" just as good as, or better than taking the entire inventory with me. I take: Gun 5 shells TP Sandpaper & Scotch Brite 1 boxcall & chalk 1 slate call & 2 strikers 2 or 3 diaphragms a bread tie (for tag attachment) a water bottle
HuntnMa
Re: What do you take with you? i take 2-3 calls, at least 2, with about 14 strikers, lol....i bring clippers in case i need to cut a palmetto or two....i bring my bobblehead hen decoy alwys, sometimes i bring a jake too....potty paper...i do my own hootin' with my voice, but i can't do a crow so i bring one of them.... Rhino
Re: What do you take with you? What do you need to be successful? That's sort of different than what we choose to take. Like many, I take more than I really need but I prefer to switch calls sometimes if I have to relocate to get in front of a bird. All you really need are the calls you feel confident using, materals to prep them like sandpaper, gun, shells, TP (just in case), and a water bottle. My turkey gear sort of goes like this: small flashlight compact binocs gun 4 shells call prep materials (chalk, sandpaper, etc.) diaphram call case with calls 2 to 4 slate calls 4 to 6 strikers 1 box call (sometimes) gobble call crow call water bottle 2 camo mask & 2 pair of camo gloves small hand limb pruners pocket knife TP in a zip loc bag extra zip loc bags (in case in rains to put calls & wallet in) digital camera insect repellent and/or thermocell (if needed) I don't care to use decoys for my own reasons so it's a very rare occasion when I'll take any. About the only time I do is when I'm taking a youth hunter with me.
need2hunt
Re: What do you take with you? [ QUOTE ] hat do you need to be successful? That's sort of different than what we choose to take. [/ QUOTE ] Boy ain't that the truth!!! My "Essential" pack 2 different pot calls (this year it will be one of Strut10's and one of Alex's) 3-5 different strikers (I have a bad tendancy to lose these along the way) A Primos "stacked" mouth call crow call shells gun gatoraid TP Turkey huntin chair (wish it had better camo though, also this sometimes get dropped into the next pack if I don't want to tote it) My "Better take it Just in Case" Pack includes everthing above plus Primos Lil Heartbreaker Box call (I'm no a big box call fan (sorry) but I like the sounds of this one) couple more pot calls few more strikers pruners decoys ground blind (depending on where I'm going and if I'm taking my kids) snacks owl call and probably about 20 more pounds of stuff that I may never use I won't go into the camo stuff other than like Rhino said a face mask and gloves are on my usual list. Guest Tail_Feathers
Re: What do you take with you? I start out with more but wind up carrying about what Strut10 does. A box, a slate or two, two to three strikers, mouth calls, water and TP. Toss in a couple of locator calls, maybe a deke or two, extra shells, extra gloves, mask, etc.--well it adds up in a hurry. I'm thinking of trying a Camelbak this year since I drink so much water when hunting.
