inline or breakopen?

Re: inline or breakopen?

Break OPEN!... DONT FORGET THAT EITHER...

Ok, here is the reason. As any ML'er Owner will tell you, they have to be cleaned... A lot. The break overs are 10X easier to clean. They are very accurate too so youre not really giving anything up.

Once you pull the breach plug its like a singleshot shotgun. You can clean them in half the time. The typical inline has some Dis-assembly.

Btw, if youre looking for a ML'er I have a cheap CVA wolf ready to sale. I bought it this year, killed a buck with it, and now am letting it go.... Just FYI.

Re: inline or breakopen?

In-line is by far the better choice. Particularly one with a bolt that can be completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. There are too many places in a break open action that are difficult, if not impossible o get at. I'd rather spend a few extra minutes cleaning and have the peace of mind that comes with it. Besides, if you're like most, it will likely take you longer to find and gather the cleaning supplies than the actual cleaning.

Re: inline or breakopen?

I have to agree with billkay on this. I have a Knight Revolution which isnt a break open, but super easy to clean. The whole trigger machanism is one piece and simply just rotates out of the gun after you pull a lever to release it, then take out the breech and its completely disassembled. Three peices to clean and no hard places to get to to clean. And mine will shoot a group of 3 inside a quarter at 100 yards...Can't beat that.

Re: inline or breakopen?

The drawback to break open guns is the two piece stock. I would take a one piece stocked gun over a two piece stocked gun most times.

Another drawback to break open guns can be cleaning out the firing pin. The Encore should have the firing pin removed and cleaned regularly when using it as a ML. The same can be said for some of the other inlines like the Remington 700 ML and the Knights.

The break open guns require the gun to me moved to prime the gun if you have a bad or wet primer. on a bolt or falling block gun it's not as awkward.

As far as longevity, its all about how the gun is cared for.

Re: inline or breakopen?

I own both. I really can't say one is any more different than the other when it comes to cleaning. I can say that I totally love my Knight Long Range Hunter! One quick pull of a pin and the bolt is removed. Remove the breech plug and clean. BillKay is right about more nooks and Crannys. You don't have as many in the inlines. The less area that sees burnt powder....the better. My Knight .52 cal is a true 200 yard Whitetail Whomper!! smirk.gif

Re: inline or breakopen?

I prefer the two piece stock. No need for barrel bedding etc. here. I have hunted in nearly blinding rain and have not had a wet primer in my Traditions Pursuit Pro.

If anyone can deprime and reprime a muzzleloader without moving the gun I would like to know how they do it!
