I'm at 820" now.

1 buck at 150"

2 bucks at 145"= 290"

2 at 130"= 260"

and one more at 120".

150+290+260+120=820

I hope to make a significant change in that number in the next few years.

I dint doubt you will James!! good to see you on again ..congrats on the second "little"

1st off congratulations fullrut. That's some great bucks! Am I there yet...nope. For the heck of it I checked my numbers & I stand a few inches short at 896 7/8.

JMHO but that sort of number reflects how fortunate some hunters are to have great places to hunt where that kind of number can realistically be achieved. Many hunters will hunt their entire lives killing fully mature bucks that can't grow that much bone simply because it's not a possibility for the deer herd where they hunt. For example, a friend of mine killed a 158" buck in the Midwest that was a 3.5 year old buck. Here in MS I don't recall ever seeing a 3.5 year old buck with what I thought had more than 110" of bone on his head. Most 3.5 year old bucks here in MS have less than 100". A well known bow hunter friend of mine once told me...if you want to kill big rack bucks the 1st thing you have to do is hunt where they exist in huntable numbers. He moved from Montana to Iowa back in 2000 simply to increase his odds for encountering big antlered mature bucks. I spent a lot of time over the years bowhunting in the Midwest. The dream buck there is a 200" buck. The dream buck in MS is 150". There's only been 1 buck that made the 150" mark killed on our club in MS in the 24 years since I've hunted there. I killed it bowhunting here & it was a 6.5 year old buck.

With all that said...to make the playing field even across everyone's turf here on the forum, how about the age of a hunters top 6 bucks adding up to 30. That's an impressive number to achieve too and more of a realistic possibility for everyone here than total inches of bone. For what it's worth, my top 6 add up to 37 years if you go by the 1/2's in age...34 if you don't add the 1/2's.

Thats a good idea. My ages are 4.5, 4.5, 5.5, 5.5, 6.5, 6.5, so my number is 33. I have killed a buck here in Indiana that was more than 8.5 but he isn't one of the scores that makes up my 900. Theres no doubt you have to hunt them where they are. I am fortunate I live in a good area.

Fall a little short here Al. Would be nice if we could get a better age class on bucks here, but so long as this state continues on the same liberal management practices it is jut not going to happen on this little place we have. We don't have nearly enough land to make any significant difference with so many properties around us seeing the kind of pressure they do, unrealistic expectations to hold out for a 5.5 or 6.5 year old here. That said the oldest deer I have killed was possibly a 5.5 year old, killed 3 or 4 that we think were probably 4.5 year olds and quite a few 3.5 year olds. All those have come from right here behind the house. I hold out for 3.5 year olds or better, most around here think I am crazy for passing some of the deer I pass, but I really have nothing to prove to anyone else and hunt for my goals and that means I may go a season without killing a buck.

Like you say though in order to kill big deer you have to hunt where they are, some of us don't have the options others do. I still think we could have some big deer around here if we had more willing to swallow their pride and not shoot everything they see.

Yep...y'all are right...really no way to even the field for everyone...everwhere across the country.

That's the way I feel too William. You hunt for the better age bucks you have in the deer herd where you're hunting and enjoy the experience no matter how the season shakes out at the end. If you're fortunate to hunt where bucks grow a lot of bone, it's a huge bonus. Ate my 3 Missouri buck tags this year but with the bucks we got on cams, the bucks I saw, the bucks I passed, and my buddy killing his best buck ever, it was a great season in MO. Really looking forward to next year now. BTW...my buddy thought I was crazy for passing a 145 class mature buck we had plenty of pics of in MO too! Wouldn't have passed him in MS but he wasn't even close to the upper end bucks we were getting on cams in MO.

This is all very relative as others have mentioned. What states did the kills come from, fair chase, weapon used, outfitted hunt, etc.

All I can say is if a few folks I know here "took their talents to south beach" instead of their current states those numbers might be scary.

last time i hunted with an outfitter it was a self-guided hunt and i was done in the first afternoon. i tell everyone it was pure luck. lol does help hunting where the big ones are though i will admit.
