I was seriously considering purchasing the .17 HMR, but then i just got the Remington 2007 Catalog and the compared statistics with it against the HMR to their Rem Fireball, and it looks like it out performs the HMR all across the board. Anyone have a opinion on which one is better, or pros and cons. .17 HMR or the .17 Rem FIreball? Thanks

Guess which one is better depends on what you wanna do with the gun.

The new Remington chambering, as far as I can tell, is nothing new at all. It's just a factory 17 Mach IV which has been around for years. It's basically the ballistic equivalent of the 17 Remington using a lot less powder. It probably would not make a good rabbit or squirrel gun. But for prairie dogs, chucks, coyotes, etc, the "new" 17 is in a completely different class than its little rimfire cousin. The 17 Mach IV was/is known as a tremendously accurate cartridge.

Yep, like Strut mentioned, the centerfire .17 cartridges are a different class than the rimfire versions. The 17 Mach IV as its been known for decades which is the new .17 Fireball is very close to the .17 Rem with the lighter bullets that weigh up to 25 grains. When you get into the 30 gr Bergers the .17 Rem will pull away. I have been shooting a .17 Rem for 8 years now. It has been successful taking critters out to just under 400 yards. Damage on small varmints is spectacular. It literally frags them. I have taken ground hogs out to ~350 yards with it. It turns their insides to mush. No exit hole just jello inside fur. The cool thing about these cartriges is watching the impact. I have a 6-24x scope on my .17 Rem and I can watch a hole appeat in the target as I touch the two ounce trigger. Sweet!
