Bill collector scam

Hey all, I wanted to make you aware of a new scam going around.....I thought I had it happen to me yesterday. In my case, it was a collector searching for the real debtor...they had the wrong social and dob and street addy.

I keep immaculate credit and manage my reports well, closing unused accounts, etc. It just so happens that I odered all of my reports and received them back earlier this week.

There is a new scam going around where a fake collector will call and have your name and number from the phone book. They then tell you they are with Chase or MBNA or Wachovia (the big companies) and they are calling about a debt you owe. You tell them you don't owe the debt and then they ask for your social and date of birth to check their records. If you give it to them, you are done.

The best rule of thumb is to suspect everyone and NEVER give your social out over the phone unless you call them and know it is the right number. Don't take down the number that they give you and call right back because that just proves they have a phone....which you know because they just called you. If you suspect it could be a real debt you owe, go to the website of the company they said they work for and then ensure it lists the 1-800 number the people gave you. If a collection agency, go to their website and verify it.

If and when you give out your social, just give them the last 4 digits only.

Scumsuckers!

Re: Bill collector scam

Good advice New. Been getting a lot of weird calls here lately from private name and numbers.

Not sure if this one is a scam or what, but when you answer it is a pre recorded message telling you to call so and so. Have gotten to where I either pick up and hang up when we have those calls or just ignore them.
