Guest wthomaslee Posted January 21, 2007 Report Share Posted January 21, 2007 Anyone know who will rebarrel a 30-30? I've got an old marlin nonmicro-groove that I would like to get redone. Its my fault. I thought I was cleaning it well and it looked clean at the end of every year when I put them up for the season. I havent hunted with it in about 20 years but reoil the barrel. This year I thought I'd get it out and it shot well with 1.5" @ 100. When I cleaned it at the end of the year with a copper cleaner its nor smooth inside the barrel anymore. I dont know if its etched or pitted, but I can still pull copper with the foam. It wont hit a paper plate @ 50 yards now after shooting a box of ammo. any ideas? A google search turned up Billings Gunsmiths but I doubt you will need to go to that extreme. I have a couple guns with pitted bores that still shoot MOA. All the pitting does is make the barrel foul more. Some guns like to be shot dirty. Some like to be squeeky clean. You have to experiment a little to see what it likes. This is the first time I have used a good copper remover and the spot is small. I haven't hunted with it in a long time but it was a gift from my folks back in 78. Still looks new except the muzzle is worn slick. will load another box of ammo for it. I still have the marlin 4X32 scope on it when it was new. [/ QUOTE ] That's the first place I'd look for a problem. I've got a Malin 336 30-30 that was bought back in the early 50's by my grandfather. It has had thousands of rounds through it and shoots about a 1" group at 100 yards. If you've shot less than 5 boxes of shells with it a year I would say to take off the scope and get something newer on top of it. My guess is that your problem will be solved.
