On the way back I found a rock that looked like several layers of slate. My field really doesnt have rock, its bottom land so the sight of a rock seemed odd. I picked it up and took it in the house with us. After a quick wash in the sink I was holding a baseball size piece of petrified wood. That got my curiousity to rouse so I ran back out and turned over the first rock I could see breaking through the ground. Yep, another piece! Bark and all! Its bigger then a softball. I guess all this ice and precip has brought it to the surface! Im going to take a shovel out this weekend to that same spot and see what I can dig up. This is the first time ive ever found petrified wood laying in anywhere (other than a national park). Especially in Oklahoma! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We are about to shut down our machines and move floors (renovation of the offices). I knew it would have me down most of the day so I didn't take any last night. A spelunker here at work said its not petrified wood but layers of rock. Im not 100% sure he is right. I literally have very little rock on my place. You can dig 10' with a shovel and not find a single rock... Literally. Then this stuff surfaces! It looks a lot like wood to me. If it is Ill have something. This spelunker (caver) said there hasn't been petrified wood found around here. I have no idea how accurate that is but Im going to find out! [/ QUOTE ] We have tons of Flint, arrow heads, spear heads, etc around here. They are pretty easy to come by but ive NEVER found wood! My dad has a pretty impressive collection of arrowheads, scrapers, pottery and other stuff. The next time I am over there I will have to get a pic! Think about it. If it was petrified wood, it had to have been laying there at LEAST several thousand years to mineralize. While hunting in around the Killdeer Mountains in ND I found tons of petrified wood kinda cool but didnt really feel like carrying rocks around while stalking Mule Deer. Then after a blown stalk I tried to circle a moving deer by running down a dried up river bed. when i stoped i happened to look down and right there was a fossil of some sort of leaf in a rock.
