Varmint rifles

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what rifles you guys use for varmint hunting. Right now all we have is a .243 and a 7mm. This is really our first year of actualyl trying to hunt coyotes, tons of fun! grin.gif So by next year I would like to get my own gun more than likely a 22-250, or a .223 what ever ismore than likely cheaper.

So I guess I am looking for a good used one but not sure what to get. Is one more accurate than the other? One shoot further than the other? Any certain gun recomendations???

Re: .17 HMR

its all goin to depend on who you ask. some will say dont use them because every coyote they have ever shot has run off. other guys will tell you to stick to head shots. others say stick to ranges under 100yrds. everyone is going to have a different opinion. As for me i would use one but i would only stick to head shots and keep the ranges close. i have seen what they do to a fox so im sure they would work on coyotes under the right conditions. I wish i had a dollar for everytime i saw a post about using a .17HMR for coyotes. i would be a rich man!LOL.

I use two. The first is a Ruger M77 MKII in 22-250. It wears a Burris 4.5X14 and sighted in at 2" high at 100 yards it hits dead on out to 330. This thing is a tac driver but it weighs 10 lbs. without the scope & Bipod.

This is the other. It weighs about 7.5 lbs. without the scope and bipod so it's much easier to lug around. This is the most accurate rifle I own. It shoots .5" or less at 100 yards. It's a .223 so bullet drop is more than the 22-250 but not by to much. It wears a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5 X 14. This thing is a REALLY fun to shoot and deadly on yotes. Who says AR's can't be used for hunting?!?!?
