Re: Online College Degrees?

The wife did some classes through Regents college from New York, think they changed their name to Excelsior. She basically studied at her own pace, then took proctored exams on a computer at a Sylvan learning center.

Kind of at a tossup here still myself between going back for a physical therapy degree or getting credentials to teach science. Just don't want to sit in a classroom, and either way, most if not all of what I do will likely be an online or correspondence type program.

Re: Online College Degrees?

I'm working on my masters right now through Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

There are pros and cons to this type of schooling as I see it.

The biggest pro for me is the convenience. I really don't have the time to go to a campus type setting now to complete my degree.

The biggest con for me is that you miss a lot of the material, and what the professor expects if you can't physically talk to the person.

As for undergrad work, I would never get my undergrad online. Be careful to check the credentials of the college too. Make sure they are fully accredited.

Re: Online College Degrees?

Laura,

Part of the college experience is just that, experiencing college and seeing what its like. I had a trig class with a grandmother once, so you get to meet fasinating people that you would not get a chance to meet.

Plus more often than not colleges have very flexible classes to fit your schedule. To get your feet wet take the basics and see what you think about it. I think you will like it by experiencing it in person than just doing it online. Good luck!

Re: Online College Degrees?

My wife got her PhD through Walden University using an online program about 5 years ago. Now she is a professor for Univ of Phoenix and has taught undergraduate classes, masters, and now mainly teaches doctoral level classes.

I find it amazing how many of her students that have computer crashes when big assignments are due, can't log into the university e-mail server, and other sorted excuses. There is still a strict timeline so its not at your own pace. Like Tominator said, the main benefit is you don't have to commute to campus. Many of them still have some sort of residency requirements so you will have to travel to the campus to take face to face classes for a month or two at a satellite campus.

I believe it is important to attend the best school you are able to attend.

Any large state school would be a good to place to attend. You are going to have the best employers in the state and the country there recruiting you your senior year. You are going to have access to any major that you would want to study. Attending a big school is going to expose you to many more career ideas than a small school.

This is also going to give you and edge when you are applying for a job. If a potential employer has you the Ohio State grad vs the University of Phoenix grad who would you pick?

With my experience it is in your best interest to attend the best and biggest school you can.

Also you can think about starting at a community college and transferring to a big school later. This will save you money and in some cases guarantee admission into the school of your choice.

In VA you are guaranteed admission coming out of community college to most of the bigger schools if you maintain good grades.

Online degrees are great for what they are but, they do not give you the same experience as sitting in a classroom with prof.

There is plently of loan money out there if you want to attend school. So don't let that keep you from attending the school of your choice.

It seems like a big investment now but, it will pay off in the future.

I did my undergrad/bachelor's degree at college, commuter all 4 years. Thinking about finding an online Master's program, something decent and accredited at least. I think after you've epxerience college, it would be fine for an online degree, because you kind of learn what to expect, but going straight out of high school to an online program might be difficult but just my 2 cents.

Re: Online College Degrees?

my aunt is gettin her degree in speech pathology degree online. her class is basically a chat room kind of thing where she can talk to everyone in the class and can directly talk to the instructor. but i agree college is something you need to experience. get out on your own and do you own thing. its basically the only time in your life where you have no worries in a sense. you dont have to worry about your parents, do what ever you want(almost). i thought about goin to the University of GreatFalls College of Tech. the downside was that they didnt have dorms to stay in. i would have had to drive a 100 mile round trip everyday. but i was for that cuz i have a girlfriend back at home in highschool and i am really close with my family. but my grandpa told me that he tried that for his first year of college and he said that it was just had to study for college classes while bein at home with all of the distractions. again thats just a matter of your own self disicpline. i was shared the same room with my two brothers all through highschool and i knew i wouldnt be able to study for college to my full potential on my bed at home like i did for highschool. its all a matter of what you want to do and think will work out. now im attending the University of Montana-Western in Dillon MT and it works out fine. i drive home for the weekends and i get to see everyone at home while at the same time i can concentrate on my work while i am away. so its just a matter of what you want to do.

Re: Online College Degrees?

laura,

i started out going to the university of cincinnati and got my associates degree from there, now i am working on my bachelors degree from colorado tech online in human resources management. let me tell you, your young, get the college experience while you are young! i wish i would have finished at uc but i decided it was time to start working. i believe if you have to or need to work then go for the online, the people at colorado tech are awesome, they call me every other day and have been more helpful than the people i saw in person at UC. if you go the online route you have to be self motivated,in the end its up to you and what you feel comfortable with, take lots of time to think it over, and either path you go as long as your degree is accredited properly you wont have any problems,my aunt is a human resources director and she said she didnt look to see where the degree came from just that the applicant had it and it was accredited. if you have any questions about my new online learning experience feel free to pm me with questions!
