Re: input please?

I have never understood the 7mm-08 but I know a lot of friends that really like it. If I wanted flat and fast, I would go with a .280 or for a larger grain bullet, I would go with a .308. If you load your own, then the 7mm-08 would be great. If you shoot factory loads, you will get more selection with the .308.

Re: input please?

well i am looking for a rifle for hog hunting. some friends are tryin to plan a trip to go sometime. i have a 243 but its just an excuse for another barrel! would like a 300 win mag barrel but they don't offer one. 45-70 seems a little much, and i don't know much about a 308 either

Re: input please?

If your wanting to go up I would go with the 308. The 7mm-08 is a great round but ammo is quite a bit more than the 308. 7mm will shoot flatter and is plenty power for what you want. If you reload I would probibly get the 7mm because the recoil is going to be a lot easier on you.

Bottom line, uh no bottome line. They're both good rounds based on the same case 308 is a little bigger and cheaper.

Re: input please?

I would say the .308 before the 7-08. If you've already got a .243, you might as well put a little more difference between your calibers. The 7-08 is a heckuva deer round. The .308 is even better IMO. Way better selection of larger bullets if you ever want to shoot a bear, elk or moose. The 45/70 would make a great choice, too. Factory 45/70 loads are really quite mild........but even at that, they'll flatten hogs. Then you can always kick it up with some "custom factory" loads like Buffalo Bore and REALLY have a whomper & stomper.

Re: input please?

In reality, there is no real field difference between the 7-08 Rem and the .308 Win. Sectional densities can be comparable with decent bullets so penetration is really not an issue.

.277" (.270) 130 grain, SD .242

.284" (7mm) 140 grain, SD .248

.308" (.30) 165 grain, SD .248

.277" (.270) 150 grain, SD .279

.284" (7mm) 160 grain, SD .283

.308" (.30) 180 grain, SD .271

The 7-08 Rem is ballisticaly the same as the 7mm Mauser which has been used around the world to take critters a lot bigger than what we have here on this continent. It still have enough power to it to do needed damage to big bones on bigger critters. With the 140 gr bullet it is comparable to the .308 with 165 and 180 gr bullets, the .270 Winchester with 140 gr bullets.

The 7-08 Rem is a good choice. It will handle most big game readily. You may have to reload to make it optimum for elk and moose, but it will do the job. Factory ammo is limited to the 120 gr and 140 gr bullets which will work for the majority of hunting critters up through caribou.
