Guest ronin Posted December 21, 2004 Report Share Posted December 21, 2004 I picked up some Barnes X Bullets 500 Gr. .458 Flat Base Cannelured. They are HP's with a relatively small nose. Probably small enough to impact the primer of a bullet in front of it in a tubular mag. I want to load these up in some new 45/70 brass for an upcoming hog hunt. I'll be shooting my Marlin 1895 G and based on the aforementioned data, I'll obviously only keep one round in the mag at a time. Anyone have some good load data for this bullet? The only bullets they show are the 300 & 400 grain bullets and neither of these are the "x" bullets. They do show original FN bullets and original SP bullets. If I were you, I would call Barnes and see what they have to say. The 500 grain bullet might cause massive pressure and the action can't take it. Call Barnes at 1-800-756-2465. Since you will be handloading, you will determine what the pressure of the loaded round is going to be. You may run into a overall length problem with the bullet. When the cartride is loaded with a bullet that big for a repeater, the bullet must be seated so deep in the case to cause problems with powder levels. Start at the lowest suggested level and work up slowly. Check the loading manuals to see what the data is for a 500 gr bullet. It is not going to be very fast. There are much better choices for the .45-70 cartridge. Some popular powders for the 500 gr thumpers are: A2495 A3100 H4198 Varget I also suggest you contact Barnes and request some loading data. I have a lot of load data for lead 500 Grainers but nothing for the Barnes. I've got some H4198, too. I'll call Barnes this morning. Thanks.
