wtnhunt
In todays world with news of bus crashes and rampant crime in some areas, would you let your 5 year old little girl get on a bus to take a trip one and a half hours from home to a place where there is a abnormally high crime rate. Got a note that the kindergarten classes will be going to Memphis on a field trip. I just cannot let my kid go on that trip. The wife agrees with me, for anyone who does not know, Memphis has one of the highest if not the highest violent crime rate per capita in this country. Hate to have my kid get left out, but at the same time am really thinking this trip while it might be harmless just is not a good idea. Would you let your kid go without you going with them? Guest Andrea
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? ABSOLUTELY NOT. You made the right decision. Heck, I wouldn't let my TEN yr. old go. But I might consider going with him!

buckee
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? My daughter was not allowed to go on every school trip. As a parent, you just can't be too careful. I used to razz my wife all the time about being over protective, until we had a child molester stalking my baby, without our imediate knowledge. You're her parents, and if you don't feel good about letting her go, then go with your gut instincts. Geesh, I just noticed this is my 30,000 post and I didn't say Ditto

coles
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? we never had to worry about crime on our field trips, we had to worry about getting left behind or had to worry about grizzly bears.

AdvantageTimberLou
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? Congrats on the post count Buckee! As for your little girl and the trip, I would be the same way. I just can't see me letting my child spend the night somewhere else with parents I do not know. My wife has already said, when the kids have field trips she is taking off working and going! She wants to be there and most times teachers want parents to help out and chaperone. Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? i think it would depend on where they are going (for example a museum or just walking around from place to place on the streets of the city), ..what they are doing...and how many adults will be on the trip with them...we had plenty of field trips around this area when i was growing up...always to the museum, planetarium, stuff like that, and there was never any problem...(flint is ranked 3rd or 4th most dangerous city ion the country))
muggs
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? I agree with Chris. I want to hear the details if I was the parent and then I'd make up my mind. But 5 years old is pretty young for a feild trip, isn't it? I'm trying to remember, but I don't think I went on a field trip until I was around 8 or 9. [/ QUOTE ] They are going to a childrens museum Chris. It is a day trip there and back, they will return to the school a little after the normal school day is over. Just last week we heard a story on the news about a little girl in Memphis who got shot in a drive by while she was sitting in a car. Honestly dont think anywhere in Memphis is safe anymore. SaskMan
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? I'm a teacher...of 10 yr olds. Forget the crime rate, the bus ride in itself is absurd for such little ones. No seems very reasonable.

wtnhunt
Re: field trip for a 5 year old? Yeah, she wont be going on this one for sure, was just curious how others felt, and looks pretty obvious that we have good reason to think what we do. Got a strong feeling she wont be the only one in her class left behind.
