What is accurate

Well gang lately we have had a lot of questions about accuracy and what guns are accurate. So I know have yet another question/survey.

What do you call accurate?

A few years ago accurate to me was being able to put 3 shoots into the inner ring of a paper plate at 100 yards. That was good enough to kill the deer around here I shoot at so it was great. Then I was introduced into shooting long ranges/bench shooting. WOW has my definition of accurate now changed. Now if my guns don't shoot at least a MAO at 100 I am MAD. mad.gif and generally want a lot better but... smile.gif

That is just how I feel and want my guns to shoot now.

No heated debate or arguments just different views and opinions.

So how about you guys where do you stand? smile.gif

Everyone talks of MOA----I have no idea what that is. I like 3 shots in a dime----but I take 3 shots in a quarter at 100 yards from a bench. CB

Re: What is accurate

First off when I say average, I am talking about 5 seperate 5 shot groups at 100 yards making up the average.

It depends on the gun. For a shotgun with rifled slugs, I am happy with 4" at 75 yards. With a rifled bore and sabots, 4" at 125 yards are acceptable.

For my muzzleloaders, it all depends on the gun. For my pyrodex gun, 2" at 100 yards is more than enough. I like it down to less than 1.5" for my long range Savage smokeless ML though.

For my short - medium range deer rifles (out to 200 yards) with my 45-70 with a 2-7x scope, I am happy with 2" groups even though it will shoot much better. My Rem Model 7 guns with short buggy whip tapered barrels, I am happy with 1.5" groups at 100 yards. With my medium to long range guns I want 1" or better at 100 yards. For my long range guns, I want sub 1" groups on average.

For varmint rifles, I want 1/2" groups at 100 yards. For benchrest guns, it has to be under 1/4" groups at 100 yards.

Re: What is accurate

The goal for accuracy shooting is generally perfection. That is, every shot going into the same hole. Then along comes reality, and while the goal is still the same, we can satisfy ourselves with much less. Right now, I have a .222 that will give me under 1/2" at 100 yards under some pretty ideal conditions. I'm pretty sure that it is capable of a whole lot better, so the variations are more because of flaws in my shooting or re-loading techniques. I have learned to accept that but my goal is still to place a 5-shot group in the same hole.

I'll probably never get there unless there is some significant luck involved, but I'll keep on burning powder trying to get there. That's all part of the fun.

VERY TRUE!! To many factors involved to be able to shoot hole through hole. Wind, human, temp, your loads ect. But its a TON OF FUN trying to do it!!! smile.gif
