Well, our son's team was 3-0 going into Saturday's game against who?.....the Florida Gators.

Well, the score was 2-0 and we were on the losing end at that point in the game. They rolled an in-field grounder that...like many...turned into a triple. Well, our boys recovered and got the ball to the short stop who ran towards the runner who had rounded third and hung up between third and home. It was definitely looking like we were going to have an out. The other team's third base coach was yelling at the player who was unsure what to do and wasn't doing much listening for him to get back to third base. Since the player wasn't listening, the other team's coach grabbed the kid and pushed him back towards third....stopping short of putting him on the base.

For those that don't know, that's an automatic out.

Well, our coach started yelling to the Ump that he can't touch the player. The two umps conferred at the pitcher's mound and then one went back to his position behind second base and the other back to the plate. I guess their answer was that they didn't see it so they weren't calling the out.

He ended up scoring making it 3-0. Our boys rallied and ended up getting two runs during our last bat giving us what SHOULD have been a tie to make us 3-0-1.

I am not so upset with the umps (they are both terrible....calling one pitch that hit in front of the plate and skidded across in front of the batter's toes--on the ground--a strike). The person I am so upset with the most is that 3rd base coach. What kind of a man lets his team collect a win when he knows that he violated a rule and the runner should have been out. He taught them a lesson that as long as the autorities (cops, umps, teachers, parents) don't see your infraction, then you can profit from it. Sad state.

Our group was trying to be respectful and I applaud our coaches for not raising their voices (except to get the ump's attention). There was no heated argument or anything like that. I am the official scorer for our team and as the 3rd base coach walked by back to the dugout, I yelled over to him and asked him (no kids were nearby) if that is the way that he intended to win the game, knowing he violated a rule. He ignored me and acted like he didn't hear me, so I couldn't help but yell back "I'm scoring that an OUT".

Come what may, had I done what that 3rd base coach did, I would have called time and talked to the umps. I would have admitted it and then went and explained it to my player.

As it is, a team lost a game because he refused to admit his mistake. He knows what he did and they know what he did, especially that runner on 3rd base. Some lesson, huh?

Yeah that kid should definitly have been an out according to the rules but, it is the umpires job to catch the coach or player breaking the rules.

I understand what you are saying New but, I don't think that it is the coaches responsibility to call the kid out.

That is part of the game. Sometimes you get the call sometimes you don't.

How many hits did your team get?

Do you really expect little league umpires to be very good? In my experience coaching my son's team for the past 7 years in youth sports, almost all the umps/refs are bad....nothing against them, they just are.

They are a little questionable.

This past summer in adult league we actually had an ump curse at a player. It was impressive and unwarranted but, what do you expect for $70.
