3seasons Posted March 26, 2007 Report Share Posted March 26, 2007 Well it looks like if you want to get a bird just hunt close to me. Went to some public land Sat. morning to see if my luck could change. After talking to one other guy at the end of the road we decided on which areas we would hunt, that way we wouldn’t mess each other up. I walked down the road about a mile and waited on daybreak to see if I could locate a bird. Just at first light I owled and a bird gobbled off to my left down a large hardwood flat that had a creek in the bottom of it. Long story short. I went in as close as I dared to get and set up. I made one tree yelp and they cut me off 3 birds double gobbling. Then it happened, I could hear a box call just behind me on the road. As bad as I hated to I called back, this went on for about 5 min. The birds were fired up and finally the other hunter went on his way. After the birds flew down and went the other way I was able to call them back to me. (Nice highlight after the morning hunt before) The first bird in was the loudest, deepest, long gobbling JAKE I’ve ever heard , his beard was so short it pointed up instead of out. Well he walked past me gobbling every breath and all the while the other two birds were closing the distance. Well when they go to 15yds both of them were jakes also. One was strutting and drumming, both had good gobbles. Well I started to mess with them and I had them going nuts. One even triple gobbled. Then what fun I was having ended with a gun shot behind me. Someone shot the jake that passed me. Well I got up and hurried out to the road to see if I cold see who shot the bird. I did find him but he didn’t have it on him (in MS its illegal for anyone over 15 to shoot a jake) I asked him if he got the bird and he said yes but he couldn’t believe I didn’t get at shot on it. I told him that all I saw was jakes. Well he said he shot it at 20yds and dustrolled it but he couldn’t find it in the cutover. (he didn’t see it fly or run off) I offered to help him look for it but he insisted he would walk over a mile to go get some help to look for it. I offered again but he refused. I went on my way I just hope he came back and retrieved the bird and didn’t let it waist. It’s bad enough to do what he did but to leave it laying in the woods in worse. I'll bet you could find a dove in there at that range. It was jake weekend for me too 3seasons. Worked one Saturday that ended up with a buddy tagging along. That jake sounded like Gobblersaurous from the limb up to the last time he gobbled right in front of me. Called him up to about the 10 yard line. One of those super jakes with a 5" beard sticking straight out followed by a buddy with a normal jake beard. Sunday same thing different area except 3 jakes instead of 2 but they were the only ones that gobbled when they touched down. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I had a guy shoot a jake last year that I had called in....the bad part was that the bird was on our side of a creek and the guy that shot it was on the other side! When he crossed the creek and saw us standing there his face was priceless! The part that wasn't priceless was the fact that my dad knew the guy had about a 30 minute walk back to his truck so he made sure the DNR was waiting on him when he got there.
