Hillbilly
One of the pups brung in a baby rabbit. I was upset that she brung it in... wasn't dead, but cold and shivering. Put it down and locked up the dogs. Will let them go in about a month or so.
coles
im not sure i understand why you locked them up. i mean you train them to get rabbits right? then when they catch one you lock them up for a month? seems to me like you are not using the right type of punishment. and for a month? i dont get it. seems cruel to punish them for something they are bred and trained to do. The reason I'm going to lock them up for a month is because if they go around killing baby rabbits, then my population of rabbits this winter will be down big time. One beagle did run a rabbit today, and I think in the confusion the baby got ran out.... In a month I'm sure those young rabbits will be old enough and quick enough to escape my pups. Thats why. coles
that sounds like a good enough reason to me. i guess it just sounded bad that they caught a rabbit and you were now locking them up. this is probably a stupid question but are you goin to let them out during this month time period? Guest beagleman
I have a few pups Im tryin to start myself. The other day my dad and I went out to the club and I almost wacked a baby bunny with my tally ho stick before I realized it was there. And then when I yelled at dad to check it out. The dogs decided that for the first time of the day they wanted to see what we was doing. So we had to fight off 2 old dogs and 3 pups. Talk about fun, had to tally ho them on a false rabbit. luckly shortly later I jumped up 2 rabbits though they may have been mateing cos they jumped up at the same spot at the same time, You should see dogs chase 2 diffrent rabbits. Luckly there was 2 handlers so I went with one and the old man went with the other. Sure wish rabbit populations would grow back in my point of view rabbit hunting is the best hunting bar none. Guest raylandarcher
HillBilly,I run my hounds all year long.Summer included. They kill their share of baby rabbits and it has never even put a dent in the population in my area.I can go back to the same spots in the winter during season and still kill anywhere from 6 to 10 rabbits each time out.The population in my area is out of control. There are so many rabbits here it makes it easy to train a pup.We usually have them open up and start running by 4 to 5 monthss old.
